Chair
Barry P. Chaiken
, MD, MPH, FHIMSS has over 20 years experience in medical research, continuous quality improvement, risk management and patient safety. As founder of his own company, he worked on quality improvement studies and clinical investigations for the National Institutes of Health, the Framingham Heart Study, and Boston University Medical School.

Over the past 15 years Chaiken provided expertise in quality and patient safety to provider and payor organizations helping them utilize information technology to improve clinical and administrative activities. He has served as guest lecturer and consultant on topics including patient safety, clinician adoption of information technology, quality improvement and managed care. Chaiken also assisted hospitals and technology firms in the creation of medical software products and authoring of marketing communication materials.

Chaiken is board certified in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health as well as Health Care Quality Management. He is currently Chief Medical Officer at DocsNetwork, Ltd. where he provides thought leadership and offers clients his expertise in clinical transformation and quality improvement. Chaiken serves as Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Symphony Corporation and on the Healthcare Advisory Board of Evolvent Technologies, Inc. He has delivered more than 50 CME lectures, and is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Patient Safety and the journal of Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare. Chaiken writes a column on technology and quality for the journal Patient Safety and Quality Health Care.

Chaiken received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, NYC, his masters in public health degree in health services administration from the Harvard School of Public Health and his bachelors of arts degree in psychology from the University at Albany. He acquired his specialty training from the Centers for Disease Control as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer and from the New Jersey State Department of Health as a preventive medicine resident. He is also a Board member, Board Liaison to HIMSS Europe, 2009-2010 Board Chair and a Fellow of the Health Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS). Chaiken holds an appointment as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Family Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

With over 30 years experience in executive positions, significant healthcare policy committee expertise and care provider roles, Ms. Johnson has a comprehensive knowledge of healthcare operations, quality measurement and the role IT and clinical transformation play in enabling the deployment of leading clinical practice.

As Vice President of Applied Clinical Informatics for Tenet Healthcare Corporation, Ms. Johnson’s responsibilities include establishing the strategic vision and operations plan for provision of clinical systems used throughout the 52 hospital provider organization. With her leadership, Tenet is implementing a comprehensive clinical informatics vision and strategy in support of interoperability of data across the continuum of care. Liz is highly regarded for her knowledge and often speaks nationally and internationally. She has been published in professional journals on topics that improve the implementation and use of advanced clinical applications in support of healthcare operations, safety and quality. Ms. Johnson serves on numerous national committees and boards to influence health policy and technology standardization. Most recently Ms. Johnson has been appointed to the HIT Standards Committee at the Department of Health & Human Services in Washington, D.C. Ms. Johnson also serves as the Vice Chair of the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) National Board and Co-chair of the TIGER Initiative Staff Development Collaborative.

Immediately prior to joining Tenet, Liz served as National HIPAA Practice Leader for Healthlink (now IBM). She developed the intellectual property for assisting healthcare organizations with compliance and is seen as a thought leader in regulatory compliance and quality measurement. During her 6 years as an executive vice president with Healthlink, Liz performed a variety of management roles assisting in the migration of a small boutique consulting firm into a major professional services organization in the healthcare market.

C. Martin Harris, M.D., M.B.A., FHIMSS
is the Chief Information Officer and Chairman of the Information Technology Division of Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Additionally, Dr. Harris is Executive Director of e-Cleveland Clinic, a series of e-health clinical programs offered over the Internet.

Dr. Harris’ interest and expertise in the area of improving the practice of medicine through the innovative application of information technology, is reflected in his numerous appointments to national technology organizations including:

  • Appointed to the President’s Commission on Care for America’s Returning Wounded Warriors
  • Health & Human Services Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine
  • Elected HIMSS Board Member
  • Healthcare Information Technology Advisory Panel, which will serve as the Joint Commission’s principal expert resource on the evolution of the national healthcare infrastructure and the form, direction and speed of information technology adoption in healthcare organizations and related entities.

Dr. Harris received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His residency training in general internal medicine was completed at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar fellowship in General Internal Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and holds a Masters in Business Administration in Healthcare Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Vice Chair Elect
John H. Daniels, FHIMSS, FACHE, CPHIMS, CHPS,
is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Evolvent Technologies, Inc., a technology services firm with corporate offices in Dulles and Falls Church, Virginia, and San Antonio, Texas. Evolvent provides innovative technology solutions in behavioral health, patient information systems, information assurance/cyber security, and information systems integration, design and implementation.

John is a retired Air Force officer with over 20 years of military service. He served as Chief Information Officer of the USAF Academy Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the first and only Air Force hospital named on the 25 Most Wired Small and Rural list by Hospital & Health Networks (2005 and 2006). The hospital was also recognized as a 2006 Most Wired Supply Chain Innovator Award finalist. John also served as Chair of the Air Force Medical Information Services Working Group driving the IT direction, standards, policies and procedures for 42,000 employees in 74 military treatment facilities around the world.

John was Senior Fellow and Vice President of IT Operations at the Harris County Hospital District in Houston, Texas before moving to Colorado Springs. He has held CIO positions for other military medical organizations including DoD’s former Health Services Region 5 ensuring contract compliance and executing the IM/IT strategic plan for a $3.4 billion managed care support contract serving over 650,000 beneficiaries.

John also worked in clinical practice in both private and military settings. He served as a mental health associate in outpatient military treatment facilities and in private psychiatric hospitals, and worked as a psychometrician in a private psychology practice.

John has served on the Board of Directors for two HIMSS state chapters, Ohio and Colorado. He participated on the HIMSS National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) task force and was chair of the HIMSS Air Force CIO Special Interest Group. He serves on the faculty for various ACHE education programs and is a member of the ADVANCE E editorial advisory board. He has served as President and Vice President on the Board of Directors for the Fisher/Nightingale Houses, Inc., a charitable non-profit organization in Dayton, Ohio. He is a recipient of the Modern Healthcare/Witt-Kieffer Up & Comer Award (2001), ACHE Regent’s Award (2003), AF Surgeon General Information Systems Team of the Year award (2005), and numerous military awards and medals.

John holds an A.A.S. degree in Allied Health Sciences from the Community College of the Air Force, a B.S. degree in Computer Science from West Texas A&M University, and a M.S.A. degree in Health Services Administration from Central Michigan University.

Deb Bremer is Vice President of Oncology Business Technology for Pfizer, Inc.. She leads a global team of professionals who provide technology strategy, solutions and services spanning all phases of clinical trials, regulatory submissions, sales and marketing for Pfizer's Oncology Business Unit.  Deb previously managed the same for all therapeutic areas of Pfizer's drug portfolio, but concentrating on pre-clinical safety testing through clinical drug development and post-marketing medical support.  Her recent experiences also include leading a group responsible for coordinating Healthcare IT strategy, extending from the broader external healthcare arena through operationalizing concepts within Pfizer. 

She currently serves on the Board of Directors for CRIX International (Clinical Research Information eXchange), a not-for-profit formed to provide a secure, standards-based, shared infrastructure platform to accelerate and streamline the interaction between sponsors of new drug products, their business partners, research institutions, academia, and health authorities involved in bringing new therapies to patients.  Deb previously served on the Board of Directors for the National Center for Women and IT, and also represented Pfizer on IMPACC (Information Management Policy and Affairs Coordinating Committee), a PhRMA advisory group for the management of information, and the systems and technologies that support it, and for formation of associated industry positions to influence policy-setting from a regulatory standpoint in the industry environment.

Prior to joining Pfizer in 1998, Deb held positions of increasing responsibility in General Dynamics' Data Systems Division and Computer Sciences Corporation's Technology Management Group. She holds a BS in Computer Science from the State University of New York, and an MBA with a concentration in Management and Organization from the University of New Haven, Connecticut.

Deb has worked in multiple industries, but finds the intersection of Information Technology and the Healthcare arena, her "sweet spot" combining her career choice discipline (IT) with what has captured her heart and passion (Healthcare).

Howard A. Burde, is a nationally recognized Health Information Technology lawyer, who provides general counsel and health law advice to health information technology and health care businesses, providers and payers.

He is a dynamic health industry leader who helps clients build health care businesses and counsels health care organizations.

Howard Burde focuses his practice on three components of the health care system:

  • Working with health industry entrepreneurs and investors to build health care businesses.  Counseling emerging health industry clients on transactional, joint venture, risk management, privacy, security and licensing matters as well as capital formation and strategic development issues.
  • Counseling health information technology companies, health care businesses, health plans, providers, investors, governments, and non-governmental organizations to succeed in the increasingly complex health law regulatory, procurement reimbursement and business environment.
  • Engaging at the highest levels of health care public policy process at federal and state levels with and on behalf of stakeholder clients.

Howard is an advisory Board Member of the Health Information Management Systems Society (“HIMSS”) (the health information technology trade association); a frequent speaker and representative of HIMSS; and the Founder and organizer of the HIMSS/HIT Venture Fair and the Building Your HIT Business program. 

He has been appointed as the only independent lawyer on the bipartisan Pennsylvania Joint Legislative Committee on Health Reform.  He serves on the editorial boards of the BNA Health Law Reporter and the Journal of Health and Life Sciences law.

He is a prolific author of four books on health law topics, and is currently speaking around the country on health care opportunities under the Federal Stimulus Legislation and on Privacy and Security law.

Willa Fields, DNSc, RN, FHIMSS, Professor in the School of Nursing at San Diego State University in San Diego, California, has a diverse background in clinical nursing, education, research, performance improvement, management, and information systems that span more than 40 years. She teaches courses in Informatics, Personnel Management, and Quality Improvement in the graduate nursing program. Her research area of interest is exploration of practices that improve patient safety and the provision of patient care. Specific investigations include the effects of computerized physician order entry on medication safety events and nurses’ work, and attitudes, knowledge/skills, practice, and barriers to evidence-based practice (EBP).

From 2000 to 2006 Dr. Fields was the Vice President of Patient Care Systems in the Information Systems Department at Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, California.  She had responsibility for the patient care computer systems, including implementation of new core clinical systems that included physician order entry.

Dr. Fields has also published widely in the professional literature. She received her Doctorate in Nursing Science from the University of San Diego and her Masters of Science in Nursing from San Diego State University.

David Finn, CISA, CISM, is the Health Information Technology Officer for Symantec. Mr. Finn has 28 years’ experience in the planning, management and control of information technology and business processes, focusing on healthcare for the past 17 years. Prior to joining Symantec, he was the Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Information Services for Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), the largest pediatric integrated delivery system in the United States. He also served as the Privacy and Security Officer for TCH.  Mr. Finn’s experience includes seven years as a healthcare consultant with PwC and Healthlink, serving last as the Executive Vice President of Operations for Healthlink.

Mr. Finn’s strength is in helping businesses optimize and control technology in order to improve operating efficiency and enhance business value. Mr. Finn’s key skills include IT governance and control, project management, systems selection and implementation, business and IT partnering; and IT audit, control and security. Mr. Finn received the Symantec Visionary Award in 2008 for Security.

During Mr. Finn’s tenure at Texas Children’s Hospital, the hospital won the ECRI Institute 2007 Health Devices Achievement Award, and because of Mr. Finn’s departmental support, TCH also was awarded recognition for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. Mr. Finn has presented nationally and internationally on such topics as project management, professional leadership and staff development, and privacy and security. He has contributed to or written articles on IT management, disaster recovery and security for such as journals as CIO Digest and Baseline.

Mr. Finn holds a BA degree from the University of North Dakota and an MA from Angelo State University. In addition to HIMSS, Mr. Finn serves on the board of Houston Healthcare for the Homeless and is a member of Information Systems Audit & Control Association, American Health Information Management Association, and College of Healthcare Information Management Executives.

Kevin R. Hayden is President of WellPoint’s State Sponsored Business. Appointed to this role in April, 2008, Mr. Hayden’s responsibilities include the development, implementation, management and expansion of health coverage for the underserved through government programs such as Medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Programs, and other publicly funded programs for the uninsured and underserved populations. He leads WellPoint’s Medicaid business, which currently serves 1.8 million members in 11 states.

Mr. Hayden has over 23 years of experience in health care administration. He served as Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Services for the State of Wisconsin and was responsible for leading all public health and care delivery services to over 900,000 residents. He was a key architect in creating Badgercare Plus, an innovative program expanding coverage to all children in Wisconsin.

Prior to that, Mr. Hayden served as the Administrator for Wisconsin’s Division of Health Care Financing, where he was responsible for the oversight of the Wisconsin Medicaid Program. During his tenure as Administrator, he streamlined and modernized the state’s Medicaid program to ensure better service and improved fiscal discipline.

Mr. Hayden also served nearly 10 years as President and Chief Administrative Officer at Dean Health Systems, Inc., a billion dollar multi-specialty integrated healthcare delivery system with a physician group practice of more than 500 physicians and 3,400 employees in Madison, Wisconsin. Among his many accomplishments, he was the key architect for executing physician growth strategies that more than doubled system revenues. He also has held executive positions in physician group practices and health systems in Wisconsin, Illinois and Colorado.

He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has also received national and state awards recognizing his leadership in healthcare administration.

Mr. Holbrook is the Executive Vice President of Medicity. He is responsible for all customer experiences in the company that provides health care web products to RHIOs, IDNS, large laboratories, payors, hospitals and clinics. Mr. Holbrook has over 35 years experience in healthcare IT. His experience has been with both vendor and healthcare provider organizations. He built a multiple hospital system at Intermountain Health Care called MedSeries; was the thought leader and a key executive at Sunquest during the 1990’s including the customer support model; one of the founders and owners of KLAS; founded a consulting and web services/integration firm. Mr. Holbrook is currently a member of the HIMSS Enterprise Solution Committee and the HIMSS Board of Directors.

Jenifer Jarriel, MBA is the Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She has been with the College since May 1995. Before this position, she was Vice President of Information Services for Texas Children’s Hospital. She held that position for four years. Prior to Texas Children’s, she was Director of Information Services at Hermann Hospital, and with this organization for eleven and one-half years. She is serving as 2009 Past Chair of the LEARN organization consisting of 33 university affiliated institutions throughout Texas; HIMSS Board of Directors  for 2009, 2010, 2011; Member of the AAMC GIR Committee for 2009, 2010, and 2011; and founding member of CHIME, College of Healthcare Information Management Executives. She holds an undergraduate degree from University of Houston Central Campus and an MBA from Houston Baptist University.

Ms. Jarriel has over 29 years of information technology leadership experience in healthcare and academically affiliated institutions. She is a proven leader in identifying, evaluating, and implementing enterprise-wide technology solutions. She has specific accomplishments in start-up operations and new program development requiring technical, human, and organizational resource planning. In addition to technology initiatives, she recently developed and implemented a Leadership Institute for Baylor College of Medicine senior management in partnership with the Human Resources Officer. 

She is a Board member of The Periwinkle Foundation, a non-profit organization that develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life threatening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children's Hospital. She has been actively involved in its signature program, Camp Periwinkle, for over 10 years.

Joy Keeler, MBA, a member of MITRE Corporations leadership team, plays a lead role in the health IT activities of the company while assisting MITRE clients develop and implement strategies to realize organizational missions and goals. Formerly Deputy Director of AHRQ’s National Resource Center for Health Information Technology (NRC), Ms. Keeler played a lead role in developing the strategy, operational infrastructure, partnerships and overseeing daily operations of the large and complex multi-year project to support the deployment of health IT.

Prior to joining the NRC, Ms. Keeler was Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Chief Information Officer at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ms. Keeler led the 6 year strategic and technical drive to implement an advanced clinical information system with unprecedented clinician participation throughout the Medical Center and Health Sciences Colleges at the University of Illinois Medical Center. The Medical Center’s electronic health record was honored with the Nicolas E. Davies Award of Excellence in 2001 and most recently the Enterprise Value Award by CIO Magazine.

Prior to joining the University, Ms. Keeler worked in other aspects of healthcare information technology focusing her efforts on driving process change with technology, product development and delivery strategies for integrated healthcare networks with IBM, Baxter and Peat Marwick.

Ms. Keeler, a Florida native, has served in national advisory roles including Chair of the Nicholas E. Davies Award Committee, JCAHO Expert Panel on Health Information Technology, National Rural Health IT Conference Planning Committee, HIMSS Advocacy Committee, Advance for Health Information Executives Editorial Board and was recognized with the 2003 Excellence in Corporate IT Leadership Award. Most recently Ms. Keeler was elected to the HIMSS Board of Directors.

Holly Miller, MD, MBA, FHIMSS is the Chief Medical Officer of MedAllies, a company that leverages Electronic Health Record implementations to facilitate physician office redesign to improve office practice efficiencies and disease management. MedAllies is building and operating a Health Information Exchange (HIE) to increase the completeness of information at the point of care, increase care coordination between health care stakeholders and standardize quality and public health reporting. At MedAllies her responsibilities include providing operational, tactical, and strategic collaborative leadership related to MedAllies’ consumer initiatives, EHR implementations and support, and the health information exchange. 

Dr. Miller was formerly a Vice President and the Chief Medical Information Officer of University Hospitals and Health Systems, a community-based system with more than 150 locations, seven wholly-owned and four affiliated hospitals throughout Northern Ohio, where she was the senior clinical executive for information systems and technology responsible for the leadership and vision for the strategic planning, operations, integration and implementation of information systems and services at UH.

Prior to joining UH, she worked as a health information technology Managing Director for the Cleveland Clinic. She was responsible for the implementation and management of the PHR, Remote Monitoring, and Virtual Visit eCleveland Clinic programs. She coordinated the development of Clinical Internet Strategy at the Cleveland Clinic and supported the creation and advancement of the eHealth initiatives, exploring strategic partnerships and e-business opportunities. She also maintained a clinical practice in General Internal Medicine.

With more than 10 years of healthcare IT (HIT) experience, Dr. Miller is a frequent presenter at national meetings on HIT and PHRs, and has been active in healthcare informatics research.

As a member of HIMSS since 1999, Dr. Miller is on the HIMSS Board of Directors for a three year term that began in 2008. She previously chaired the HIMSS Personal Health Record Steering Committee, and was a physician leader of the HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Community

She is on the Dossia Physician Advisory Board, and is an ex-officio board member of Sandlot, LLC, a Texas health information exchange.

Dr Miller is currently serving as a grant reviewer for the Aligning Forces for Quality National Program Office for the Development Fund HIT grants. She previously served on the Public Programs Implementation Taskforce, and the Health Care Practice Taskforce of the National Governor’s Association State Alliance for e-Health. In Ohio she was appointed to serve on the Ohio Health Information Partnership Advisory Board, by Governor Ted Strickland; and the Department of Insurance Advisory Committee on Eligibility and Real Time Claims Adjudication. She was a member of the CCHIT PHR Advisory Task Force. Dr Miller co-chaired the 2008 HIMSS HIT Advocacy Week in Washington, DC. In 2007 she was selected as one of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives by Modern Physician Magazine.

She is the lead author on a book about PHRs, titled, Personal Health Records, The Essential Missing Element in 21st Century Healthcare, published in 2009.

Michael J. McGill, Ph.D. is responsible for the Health Sciences for Internet2.  Dr. McGill was previously the Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the Henry Ford Health System and prior to that Chief Information Officer of the University of Michigan Health System. At the University of Michigan, McGill also headed its telecommunication and phone networks. He was Vice president of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), Inc. At Syracuse University, Mike was an Associate Professor, Assistant Dean for Research and the Ph.D. Program, School of Information Studies and Associate Professor of the School of Computer and Information Science. He was Program Director for Information Science for the National Science Foundation and Senior Computer and Information Science Advisor at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He holds a BA degree from Michigan State University and an MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Syracuse University. He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is the author of articles and co-author of Introduction to Modern Information Retrieval published by McGraw-Hill.

Miriam Paramore, Senior Vice President – Corporate Strategy and Public Affairs, Emdeon, Inc.
As Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Public Affairs for Emdeon, Miriam Paramore is responsible for long-term strategic planning, government affairs, corporate communications, and strategic social responsibility programs.. Paramore has extensive healthcare and technology experience, is a national speaker, and recently joined the board of trustees for CareSource Management Group. Paramore is also a member of the national board of directors for the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and the immediate past Chair of the Louisville Health Information Exchange. She currently chairs the HIMSS Financial Systems Steering Committee, and serves on the eHealth Advisory Committee for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As a longtime advocate for HIT in the public sector, Paramore helped lead the 2008 and 2009 HIMSS Kentucky State Advocacy Days and participated in many HIMSS Advocacy Days in DC. She is working actively to reframe the conversation about healthcare in the U.S. around simple cost-saving initiatives that are available today. She delivered opening remarks to The Health Policy Forum at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and is currently working with the Congressional Budget Office helping to score savings from various health reform proposals.

Carol Selvey is Associate Vice President of Business Development with Iatric Systems, Inc., an innovative healthcare software and integration services company. Carol has over twenty-five years of experience in leadership and operational management, for both consulting and information system vendors in the health information technology (HIT) and systems industry.

Carol has a BA degree in French from Vassar College and a Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Kansas. She is a member of the national Board of Directors of the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), is a HIMSS Fellow (FHIMSS), and a Certified Professional in Health Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). Carol is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and Southwest Florida Health Information Management Association (SWFHIMA, a chapter of AHIMA). She is based in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.

Jonathan Teich, MD, PhD, FHIMSS
Dr. Jonathan Teich is chief medical informatics officer for Elsevier, the world's largest publisher of scientific, technical and health information. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard, and a board-certified attending physician in emergency medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), where he has practiced since 1983. He has been active in medical informatics and health information technology for over twenty years.

At Elsevier, Dr. Teich’s responsibilities include leading the development of the vision, strategy, and broad product design to transform Elsevier’s huge content base and publication resources into multi-level electronic reference, highly interactive clinical decision support, and other knowledge-based tools to support direct clinical practice and healthcare delivery. He also represents Elsevier in a variety of industry and government leadership councils on patient safety and quality of care, knowledge delivery, and clinical decision support.

Dr. Teich was the founder and first director of the BWH Center for Applied Medical Information Systems Research, and the Clinical Informatics Research and Development department at Partners Healthcare System. He was the primary designer of many of BWH's award-winning clinical information applications, including the computerized physician order entry system, ambulatory record, clinical decision support systems, emergency medicine systems, and the Handbook electronic information library.

Dr. Teich has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, books, and editorials in the field of medical informatics and healthcare information systems. He is the senior author of the recent eHealth Initiative consensus whitepaper, Electronic Prescribing: Toward Maximum Value and Rapid Adoption, and the government-sponsored expert report, Clinical Decision Support in Electronic Prescribing: Recommendations and an Action Plan. He is a co-author of the book, Improving Outcomes with Clinical Decision Support: An Implementer’s Guide, published in 2005.

Dr. Teich co-chairs the panel responsible for the HHS-sponsored Roadmap for National Action on Clinical Decision Support. He was the founder and first chair of the HIMSS Patient Safety and Quality of Care Steering Committee, and currently serves on its Board of Directors as well as the Clinical Decision Support workgroup. He is a board member of the eHealth Initiative, a member of the American Health Information Community Quality Workgroup, and a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. Dr. Teich was educated at Caltech, MIT, and Harvard Medical School.

Charlene S. Underwood, MBA, FHIMSS is director of Government and Industry Affairs for Siemens Medical Solutions.

A nationally recognized expert in the field of healthcare informatics, Ms. Underwood directs Siemens outreach and advocacy activities in emerging market initiatives, specifically those related to government activities in healthcare information technology (HIT) including: the U.S.

Government’s legislative and regulatory activities related to HIT; national, state, and regional healthcare information networks; Electronic Health Record (EHR) strategies; standards and interoperability; quality , patient safety, and pay for performance; and EHR product certification.

Ms. Underwood is delivering Siemens solutions message to key stakeholders throughout the healthcare industry and on Capitol Hill, while developing programs that enable Siemens leadership in key government and industry initiatives. She provides valuable input and direction to healthcare and government leaders on the power of HIT to transform healthcare through her leadership in high-profile industry organizations. She served as the first chair of Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) Electronic Health Record Vendor Association (EHRVA), is a member of the American Health Information Community (AHIC) Quality Workgroup and Expert Panel, and has served on many other advisory groups involved in HIT development. She recently earned the HIMSS Fellow designation and was elected to serve on the HIMSS Board. She also serves on the Delaware Valley Chapter HIMSS Board.

Ms. Underwood has a long history of actively advocating for industry involvement in defining how HIT is a means to improve patient safety, reduce cost, and improve patient outcomes. She has held leadership roles in influential organizations including HL7, in which she participated in defining the organization’s EHR functional standards and model; and in the Computerized Patient Record Institute (CPRI), where she was on the founding committee of the Nicholas E. Davies award for excellence in EHR implementation.

A 35-year employee of Siemens Medical Solutions HIT division, she has participated in defining business strategies and requirements for many of its clinical solutions, including INVISION®, the healthcare industry’s most widely installed HIT system, and Soarian®, the only healthcare information solution built to streamline healthcare processes through workflow engine technology.

Ms. Underwood is a Phi Beta Kappa from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. She earned an MBA in marketing from Temple University.

A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, she is married with 3 children and enjoys fitness activities, gardening, travel, and community outreach.
