Physician Community Podcast Series
The HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Community is pleased to announce the launch of the Physician Community Podcast Series. This interview series, hosted by William Bria, MD, will focus on issues of interest to physicians involved in healthcare IT and management systems in hospital and health system settings. Dr. Bria is the Chief Medical Information Officer, Shriners Hospital for Children, and is the Chair of the HIMSS Physician Community, a joint initiative of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) and HIMSS.
Future interviews in this series will address issues faced by chief medical information officers (CMIOs), including the evolving role of that position, goals for the CMIO, the CMIO’s relationship with the medical staff, and the CMIO as an influencer or decision maker.

Episode #12: An Overview of the GRADE System (Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation)
Gordon Guyatt, MD, MSc, is a physician and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics and of Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Guyatt has been a leading exponent of evidence-based approaches to clinical practice, having coined the term “evidence-based medicine” in 1990. He has published over 650 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and has also written extensively on health care policy in the popular press. In this podcast, he provides information on the sequential assessment of the quality of evidence, followed by assessment of the balance between benefits versus downsides and subsequent judgment about the strength of recommendations. This grading system – developed by the GRADE working group - allows clinicians to interpret the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and apply them for the management of their own patients.
