  • Explore a deeper look at the technical activities, tools, standards and certifications necessary to achieve interoperability through health information exchange
  • Analyze current challenges, lessons learned and opportunities with like-minded people through real-world case studies and best practices
  • Review the key components necessary when purchasing an interoperable system, including identifying systems that use standards, developing language for an RFP process, and ensuring success during implementation
  • Discuss the reasons why interoperable systems are so critical to the safe and effective delivery of patient care
  • Demonstrate how the certification process impacts your organization’s ability to exchange data and engage your stakeholders
  • Evaluate the technical requirements and profiles needed to ensure meaningful exchange within an organization and across organizational and geographic boundaries

Title: Interoperability and Integration Overview

 Speaker: Elliot Sloane, PhD, FHIMSS, President and Founder at Center for Healthcare Information Research and Policy (CHIRP)

Summary Description:  For health information technology to be interoperable, systems and software applications must be able to communicate, exchange data, and use the information to drive meaningful outcomes.   This session will provide a deeper look at the technical tools, standards, testing and certifications necessary to achieve interoperability through health information exchange.

Title: Understanding the Foundation: How Standards and  IHE Profiles Enable Interoperability

Speaker: Herman Oosterwijk, President, Otech Inc.

Summary Description:  When designed and configured correctly, Electronic Health Record systems and other health IT systems, can positively impact patient care both within the healthcare enterprise and beyond.  This session will help attendees better understand the technical requirements and profiles needed to ensure meaningful exchange within and across organizational and geographic boundaries.

Title: Discovering the Many Tools Available for Your Testing and Certification Toolbox

Summary Description: As an aid to implementers, developers, and others when working with interoperable technologies, a wealth of freely-available resources exist that facilitate the interoperability landscape.  Initiatives such as ConCert by HIMSS, the ONC Health IT Certification, Continua Plugfest, and the IHE NA Connectathon provides dozens of tools and resources to help in this journey.

Title: Looking to the Future: Leveraging Emerging Standards and HL7® FHIR®

Summary Description: With health information technology advances occurring at a rapid pace, it is critical to understand the future of emerging standards while centered on technologies of today.  By understanding the intent of emerging standards, healthcare organizations and others will have both the current and the future perspectives to facilitate true healthcare transformation.
