Interoperability & Standards Committee

Purpose

The Interoperability & Standards (I&S) Committee was formed in July 2012 in order to further advance the HIMSS strategic topic of semantic interoperability and standardization leading to successful exchange and re-use of health information. This I&S Committee consists of key health IT volunteers and multi-disciplinary experts in the fields of interoperability and standards. The Committee is charged with providing domain expertise, public policy leadership and guidance for HIMSS activities, initiatives and collaborations in the area of interoperability and standards leading to health information exchange. See the Gap Analysis and rationale for creating the I&S Committee in 2012.

Vision

Information exchange based on standards that support semantic interoperability will advance clinical decision support, evidence-based medicine, business intelligence, analytics and other capabilities.

Mission

The mission of the HIMSS Interoperability & Standards (I&S) Committee is to promote the development, implementation and dissemination of semantically interoperable, standards-based health IT systems. The seamless, effective and secure information exchange practices enabled by such standards-based systems will improve health outcomes and enhance efficient reuse of information.

Goals

  • Publish thought leadership pieces
  • Participate in speaking engagements
  • Contribute content to the HIMSS public comment platform
  • Influence public policy
  • Develop resources and tools with associated Task Forces and Work Groups
