I learned a great deal from the providers we worked with, as well as our impressive advisory board, and I have been able to apply that knowledge to the work I do now, each day, in collaborating with policy makers and other industry stakeholders.

It is paramount that the appropriate training and ongoing education are made available to those responsible for execution of the ICD-10 plan.

Throughout my career, I have had several successful implementations of EHR elements (physician portals, pathology data integration, billing applications, business intelligence and more) in various locations across the country.

Clients and colleagues alike helped me develop and appreciate the issues faced by healthcare organizations, providers, vendors, etc. Working in the U.S. and internationally has allowed me to see the contrast and similarities between the U.S. model of healthcare and that of other countries.

I first became involved with HIMSS more than 15 years ago when I was representing hospital clients in negotiating major IT systems. At the same time, I was asked to be on the technology committee for my law firm, and I found much of the general IT information from HIMSS useful in addressing IT issues in that context.

My focus during our discussion will be on the key legal challenges faced by the payers, providers and patients in the next three years and ways to align to the timelines and get help to ensure success.

Most recently, I have had the good fortune to work with an organization, CIO and clinical informatics director that value innovation and promote the pursuit of innovative thinking. As a result, in conjunction with partners, I have developed a novel system to advance clinical practice and research. I also had the opportunity to work with a team that developed a didactic/practicum program utilizing the ONC curriculum to bring nursing staff from the bedside to IT. Our first class graduated 14 nurses who are successfully building and optimizing our EMR.

My favorite activity is serving as a reviewer of the submissions for presentation to the annual conference. I have the opportunity to learn about new and exciting work being done at organizations throughout the world. I enjoy mentoring those that are selected and then, seeing the final product during the actual event.

There is a great number of people entering health IT every day, and we need even more. As a result, we have a lot of novices who need to get from zero to 100 miles per hour pretty quickly. I participate whenever I can in HIMSS virtual education events so that I can keep pace with this rapidly changing field.

The most rewarding aspect has been the opportunities to pay back (or pay forward) to others for the knowledge and networks that were shared with me 20 years ago.

Knowledge is power. Do all you can to study and research areas of interest and consistently share your information with others; it will make the whole process more enjoyable.

Last year I passed the CPHIMS certification test and became a HIMSS Fellow. I have also had the distinct opportunity of taking on the role of chair of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee.

One of the things I'm proud of during my term as chair was more directly linking our board activities to the HIMSS vision and mission statement. Our board agendas now list the vision, mission, and the four pillars of the mission (improved quality, improved safety, increased cost effectiveness, and increased access to care), so we can easily see them. Now our discussions are often framed by HIMSS’ vision and mission. I was also pleased to talk about the vision, mission, and pillars in my address at HIMSS13 and the progress health IT is making in transforming healthcare through the effective use of health IT.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with leaders from different organizations and with leadership within HIMSS.

Healthcare, as we know it today, must change, so get involved in that change, foster it, and look for ways to impact patient care every day.
March 27, 2013
Time is one of the greatest challenges nurses face. In today’s world of healthcare technology nurses are required to report and chart a great deal of information, and the process can be time-consuming.

As we build and maintain systems, we give caregivers more time to spend with their patients, provide information to improve decision-making and access information more rapidly, in order to save lives.
