On January 22, CMS launched important changes to the Medicare EHR Incentive Program hardship exemption process as a result of a recent Medicare legislation - the Patient Access and Medicare Protection Act (PAMPA). These changes are meant to lessen the burden on clinicians, hospitals, and critical access hospitals (CAHs) by reducing the amount of information they must submit to apply for an exception.
Notably, PAMPA establishes a more streamlined hardship application process where the Secretary may consider hardship exceptions for “categories” of EPs, eligible hospitals, and CAHs whereas prior to PAMPA, applications were reviewed on a “case-by-case” basis.Eligible Professionals must submit their streamlined application by March 15, 2016 and Eligible Hospitals and CAHs must submit their streamlined applications by April 1, 2016 per the timeline established in PAMPA.
