On Wednesday, February 24th, the Senate voted 89-4 to confirm Dr. Robert Califf as the next FDA Commissioner. Prior to the vote, several Senators criticized Califf for his close ties to the drug industry, and the FDA for failing to adequately address the opioid addiction epidemic. With less than a year left in President Obama’s final term, Califf will be focused on several unfished initiatives at the agency, such as e-cigarette regulations, food labeling reforms, overhauling the approval process for new drugs and medical devices, and re-evaluating how prescription painkillers are regulated.
Dr. Califf will take over for Margaret Hamburg who left government service in March 2015.
