Position Purpose

As our Coordinator, Corporate Communications, you will work with communications staff and the organization to help further the Society’s goals for HIMSS communications and social media. The Coordinator works directly with trade media and media relations activities, managing the majority of trade media calls. This position coordinates media requests for and with Senior Director, Corporate Communications. This position interacts with other SBUs including HIMSS Analytics, HIMSS Media and other strategic business units to ensure timely and effective outreach and follow-up to media and manages/maintains certain communication platforms that help ensure the HIMSS position of leading global health delivered through information.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Develop/write content for specific HIMSS initiatives and/or content areas, including online news content, news releases or other content formats.
  • Work with staff contacts and communications contacts for Davies Award and Stage 7 recognition to develop these news items.
  • Manage, with senior director, media calls for interviews by identifying correct HIMSS or HIMSS member source, coordinate interviews; follow-up with media and SME after interview to confirm completion, and track coverage. Manage calls as backup for senior director taking lead on calls and requests.
  • Cultivate relationships with trade reporters to pitch stories and with HIMSS internal communications and external agency to build relationships with reporters and develop story ideas.
  • Develop and distribute media tracking report on a bi- monthly, and as requested by HIMSS staff/subject matter experts.
  • Manage HIMSS Online News Room, update contents, and introduce new features. Work with web services and senior director to ensure HIMSS Online News Room offers relevant and easily accessible information for anyone seeking information and/or news from HIMSS. This includes posting news releases, blog posts and other news items using the organization-wide CMS system, incorporating photos and other visuals as requested and needed for each content item.
  • Social media amplification of HIMSS news on the HIMSS Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook platforms, as appropriate and within the social media guidelines for the organization.
  • Manage annual calendar; update and track progress and completed tasks.
  • Develop content and manage design with web services for three monthly newsletters: HIMSS.Net sent to all HIMSS employees; Chapter Leaders eNews, sent to chapter leaders of 54 HIMSS chapters; and Monthly HIMSS Media Update, sent to reporters and other influencers.
  • Distribute news releases and other content through media distribution service and track results for evaluation of this program.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned that contribute to the effectiveness of the department, including monitoring comments on HIMSS LinkedIn channel.
  • Understand, use and update content for HIMSS PR/news area of the website using new features of the CMS system at HIMSS. Updates are often daily and require coordination with web team, if/as needed.
  • Manage annual conference pressroom coordinating activities with internal HIMSS departments and communications and agency staff while onsite.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, strategic communications, digital communications, or mass communications.
  • One to three years’ experience in public relations or communications setting.
  • Strong written communications skills.
  • Media relations experience in working with reporters and content experts for interviews and follow-up.
  • Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress and other CMS platforms.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Customer-focused, with energetic, positive personality.
  • Healthcare and/or association communications experience preferred.
