Position Purpose

The purpose of the VP of Technology role is to build and maintain relationships with leaders of HIMSS business units and executives, to function as their consultative partner by providing technical vision and leadership. Collaborate with them and assist in achieving enterprise goals by the efficient use of technology. The VP of Technology will develop and manage technology portfolios for each department and establish and meet all IT Service Level Agreements and other Key Performance Indicators for the user community. As the senior technologist at HIMSS, the VP of Technology will also provide general oversight for the planning, coordination, and direction of activities of the technology department.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Lead and participate in technology-related strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing technology initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future technology systems across the organization.
  • Collaborate with business unit leaders to establish the company’s technical vision and lead all aspects of the company’s technological development. Coordinate global IT efforts and ensures the successful completion of IT projects.
  • Approve, prioritize, and control projects and the project portfolios as they relate to the selection, acquisition, development, and installation of information systems and technology and ensure that they are in alignment with the goals of each business unit.
  • Identify opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development.
  • Develop, track, and control the information technology annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Coordinate regular assessment of the company’s systems and operations to ascertain level of exposure to risk, and then take further steps to eliminate or manage them.
  • Provide solution to any complex IT related challenges in the organization.
  • Perform regular appraisal of team member’s performance and devise strategies to help with improvement.
  • Use an active and practical approach, direct all IT employees and vendors to attain the Society’s business and technical goals. Establish departmental goals, objectives, and operating procedures.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate department organizational structure that supports the needs of the business.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in the field of computer science, information systems, or other with significant technology experience; a Master’s degree in a  technology-related field and/or business administration desired.
  • A minimum of 15 years of related work experience; experience in IT management for a global company is desired; a minimum of eight (8) years of IT management experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing IT operations, enterprise application development, systems integration, and outsourced technology services.
  • Demonstrated experience in both strategic and tactical IT planning, organization, and development; ability to handle multiple job at the same time.
  • Outstanding analytical skills with ability to achieve results in a complex environment; ability to effectively handle stress, pressures, and challenges.
  • Well developed interpersonal skills with strong personal integrity.  Custp,er focused with assertive and self-confident personality.  Ability to build strong collaborative relationships across all levels of management; must have demonstrated ability to lead, direct and coach team members as well as listen to team members and communicate instructions effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong presentation skills.
  • Excellent understanding of project management principles. Ability to prioritize and organize work in a global work setting.
  • Understand basic information technology specialties like computer networking, web development and management, programming, data and network security.
  • Ability to analyze, select and manage technical vendors and ensure contract requirements are met.
