University of Virginia Health System Chooses Picis Software for Critical Care

WAKEFIELD, Mass., October 12, 2004  — Picis today announced a major agreement with University of Virginia Health System (UVa) of Charlottesville, Virginia, to install Picis CareSuite Critical Care Manager to automate the documentation, data flow, and workflow of 106 critical care beds extending from neonatal and pediatric to adult and post-surgical intensive care units. Critical Care Manager will automatically capture the patient’s vital signs and physiological data from medical devices and will interface with the hospital’s IDX information system, transferring all intensive care unit (ICU) data into the patient’s longitudinal medical record. This will help clinicians better manage the complex data generated in acute care areas and redirect staff time back to patients.

Picis became a natural choice when evaluating vendors because of its ability to integrate with all the leading hospital information system providers including IDX, Cerner, Eclipsys, Siemens, McKesson and Epic. “UVa Health system is looking for an integrated electronic medical record, which crosses the full continuum of care. The partnership between Picis and IDX enables critical care data to be available within the electronic medical record,” says Cindy Perry, UVa’s associate chief information officer. Critical Care Manager also provides solid architecture and support for UVa’s clinical and business needs, which were important considerations during system selection.

Critical Care Manager will be implemented first in the University of Virginia Medical Center neurological intensive care unit, enabling staff to bring a new, more integrated focus to patient care. “Everybody is really excited about the system. Picis offers many more capabilities than we currently have and we are really looking forward to being able to integrate with much of our medical equipment and technologies,” says Leah Wacksman, RN, nurse administrator at UVa Health. Picis, the leader in device connectivity, provides electronic data capture from 300 medical devices and monitors, and integrates this physiological data into the patient’s record for fast, accurate documentation. UVa staff will be able to view critical care data online from outside the ICUs, enabling them to monitor patient care anywhere and anytime.

In addition to being a real time-saver for healthcare providers, Critical Care Manager allows UVa administrators and researchers to standardize record keeping across specialty care units and analyze data as a whole. UVa staff plan to tailor the system to meet the needs of specialty ICU units while standardizing data throughout the institution. This flexible system design is part of the reason for the continued success of Picis in automating large, integrated delivery networks like the UVa Health System.

“Picis Critical Care Manager provides the best of both worlds – comprehensive functionality and expert integration. Our award-winning solution delivers the time-saving features and crucial data needed to optimize critical care decision making,” says Kathy Doub, RN, vice president of product marketing at Picis.
