Nursing Informatics

The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community was founded in 2003 in response to the increased recognition of the role of the nurse informaticist in healthcare information and management systems. This effort was intended to build a community within the HIMSS membership for those individuals with a role in nursing informatics. Its purpose is to articulate a cohesive voice for HIMSS nursing informatics community and to provide domain expertise, leadership and guidance to HIMSS activities, initiatives, and collaborations with the global nursing informatics community.

Since the formation of the Nursing Informatics focus, this community has increased to just over 2,000 nurses, representing more than 10 percent of HIMSS individual members. On-going achievements for this group include:

  • National research conducted on the impact of interdisciplinary communication and HIT -- disseminated through papers, presentations, national and international educational venues.
  • Providing educational content via the Internet, audio conferencing technologies and live seminars.
  • Providing online resources and tools to enhance nursing informatics practice.
  • Creating opportunities to collaborate and partner with other nursing informatics groups.
  • Acknowledging contributions to the specialty with the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award.
