HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award

Purpose
The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award is presented to one individual who, in the judgment of the HIMSS Board of Directors, has demonstrated significant leadership in the area of Nursing Informatics within the Society and the industry.

Established: 2004

Eligibility
Individual must be a Registered Nurse. Nominations can be made to HIMSS by any member, and should include at least one letter of reference outlining the specific contributions of the nominee.   Individuals currently serving on HIMSS Board of Directors are ineligible.

Criteria
The Nursing Informatics Leadership Award can be given for a single exceptional contribution, for a sustained contribution, or for a lifetime of exceptional leadership. Criteria for judging candidates include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated leadership in Nursing Informatics, including:
    • Clinical system development, implementation and/or optimization towards advancing the health status of patients/consumers
    • Uniquely applied clinical systems tools and techniques impacting clinician workflow/productivity
    • Served as nursing informatics leader of an outstanding healthcare organization 
    • Respected and recognized as a role model by peers
  • Actively supported HIMSS mission and membership growth, including:
    • Acknowledged leader in nursing informatics/healthcare information and management systems
    • Active supporter, advocate, and recruiter for HIMSS members
  • Made outstanding contributions to the principles for which HIMSS stands, including but not limited to:
    • Supporting lifelong learning opportunities
    • Supporting and promoting HIMSS as the recognized leader in the industry
  • Engages in the advancement of the best use of information and management systems for the betterment of health care; including leadership in the execution of the following Society goals:
    1. Membership communities and constituents include all relevant healthcare stakeholders and are engaged in the transformation of healthcare through IT.
    2. HIT and related health policies, guidelines and incentives reflect transformational knowledge, experiences and best practices.
    3. Healthcare stakeholders have the necessary tools to make optimal decisions in the development, acquisition, deployment and use of transformational health information technology and management systems.
    4. Healthcare stakeholders have access to the knowledge, experiences and best practices regarding the acquisition, deployment, use and value of health information technology that will transform healthcare.
    5. Interoperable, standards-based health IT is a key component in the transformation of healthcare. 

The Nomination Process

  • HIMSS puts out a call for nominations
  • Formal nominations are submitted using the appropriate online nomination form
  • The Nursing Informatics Community of Profession recommends candidates and submits recommendations to HIMSS Board of Directors

The nomination for the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award must include the following information:

  • A brief biographical sketch of the individual to be recognized by the award
  • A concise description of the aspects of the person’s contribution that cause it to be worthy of special recognition by HIMSS

The Award
The Nursing Informatics Leadership Award consists of:

  • A Symbol of Recognition
  • Publication of information in an official HIMSS publication and on Web Site
  • Invitation to the Annual Awards Dinner
