HIMSS12 Town Crier #2 - Stage 2: An Introduction (Session #90)
Staying the course by building on Stage 1 measures; focus on improved quality and safety; and alignment with a number of key Federal quality improvement programs were key themes as CMS and ONC announced the direction for Meaningful Use Stage 2 measures. CMS is proposing to transition former menu measures to core required measures and increasing thresholds. Eligible Providers will be required to report on 17 core measures and three of five available menu measures. Eligible Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals will be required to achieve 16 core measures and two of four available menu measures. Clinical Decision Support will be featured in five measures, emphasizing CMS focus on improving quality and patient safety.
HIMSS12 Town Crier #1 - Stage 2: An Introduction (Session #90)
ONC and CMS officials provided a preview of what would be in the expected proposed rules for Stage 2 meaningful use, certification and standards this morning at HIMSS 12 in Las Vegas. “We stayed the course” said Farzad Mostashari, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. The proposed rules, which are expected to be released tomorrow, signal several themes. Among these will be a big push towards standardized exchange starting in 2014, a similar focus on patient engagement as recommended by the policy committee, and increased focus on patient safety, continuous quality improvement and quality measures. Mostashari said serious consideration was given to increasing the level of flexibility while reducing the regulatory burden, and this will be seen in many areas of the proposed rule.
