Clinical Value

Children’s Medical Center introduced imbedded clinical pathways into hospital workflows using its Electronic Health Record (EHR). The goal was to decrease variation care, and improve patient outcomes and quality of the care. While program goals are not yet fully met after two seasons, there have been significant achievements as evidenced by the reductions in median length of stay (from 2.4 to 1.95 days), chest x-rays (from 59 to 39 percent), bronchodilator use (27 to 14 percent) and antibiotic use (from 32 to 25 percent).

Upon login, Childrens.com recognizes the user, presents unique content and allows the patient to designate an English or Spanish language preference.

Patients also have the ability to connect with one another through social media, communicate with clinicians via direct messaging, and provide clinically‐relevant data through remote care logs. Through implementation, Children’s has created efficient online workflows that save costs, satisfy patients, families and other audiences, and make Children’s the preferred provider for complex care.

Supply Chain Pharmacy

The Children’s Medical Center (Children’s) pharmacy was able to use Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology with a redesigned medication administration process to save the organization $5.2M over three years and decrease the time for dose availability. Children’s achieved an added bonus by complying with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) initiative for pharmaceutical waste destruction and becoming the first hospital in its region to meet the EPA’s medication destruction requirements.

The pharmacy has a long history of innovation with medication management starting in 1980s. With the implementation and organizational integration of the EHR at Children’s, it was a natural progression for the pharmacy to explore options that improve care delivery and decrease cost.

CPOE

Children’s Medical Center Dallas established clinical pathways and standardized order sets through its Electronic Health Record’s (EHR) Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) capability. The goal was to ensure consistent, high quality care and outcomes in patient populations.
