5. HIMSS Pharmacy Informatics Task Force Develops Definition

Recognizing the rapidly increasing role of the pharmacist in the use of healthcare information and management systems, HIMSS recently established the Pharmacy Informatics Task Force for HIMSS members with a role in pharmacy informatics. The purpose of this emerging community is to provide a professional forum related to the advancement and adoption of information systems to reduce medication errors, improve patient safety and bring measurable improvements to the medication-use cycle.  As one of its first goals, the task force developed an official definition of pharmacy informatics for HIMSS.

Pharmacy informatics is the scientific field that focuses on medication-related data and knowledge within the continuum of healthcare systems - including its acquisition, storage, analysis, use, and dissemination - in the delivery of optimal medication-related patient care and health outcomes.

To be a part of this exciting new community at HIMSS, please send an email to Christel Anderson, manager, informatics, with your contact information and related experience.

6.  Call For Abstracts For Summer 2007 JHIM
Theme of Issue: RHIOs and the NHIN

Regional health information organizations (RHIOs) have a business stake in improving the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare delivery.  As the building blocks of the proposed National Health Information Network (NHIN) initiative, RHIOs enable the safe exchange and use of health information across provider groups.  To build a national network of interoperable health records, collaborative efforts must first develop at the local and state levels.  RHIOs and the NHIN are the theme of the summer 2007 issue of the Journal of Healthcare Information Management.  HIMSS is calling for abstracts, which are due Jan. 17.

HIMSS is looking for articles about RHIO models that have been developed across the United States, offering case studies on projects that have begun to successfully share data.  HIMSS will also consider original contributions on other healthcare IT issues including computerized practitioner order entry (CPOE), patient safety, implementation of electronic health record systems, ambulatory care, privacy/security and healthcare IT leadership strategies.

Article proposals must include a 150-200 word abstract and complete contact information for all potential authors.  Electronic submissions are preferred and should be sent to Cari McLean.

9. Back To Work…Put A Chapter Meeting On The Calendar

Focus On:

The National Capital Area Chapter of HIMSS
HIT for Disaster Preparedness and Response

Thursday, Jan. 11
5:30-8 p.m.
Key Bridge Marriott
Roslyn, Va.

Recent national and international events, including the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, have heightened concerns about bioterrorism, leading public health organizations to re-evaluate methods used to report diseases.  Manual reporting of disease outbreaks or scares to health departments are often slow, incomplete and decentralized.  Automatic, electronic transmission of healthcare data can provide real-time analysis and tracking for emergency response and population healthcare.

Biosurveillance is the automated monitoring of information sources of potential value in detecting an emerging epidemic, whether naturally occurring or the result of bioterrorism.  Emerging health IT is currently receiving national and local attention in regards to policy, healthcare informatics, and medical surveillance systems.

What are the challenges and who is finding the solutions?  If these questions are “bugging” you, then attend the January session to increase your understanding on this timely topic.  The meeting will include a light dinner and networking, followed by the speaker sessions.

10. Hospitals To Implement Health Information Exchange System Barre-Montpelier Times Argus (VT) (12/24/06); Huff, Mel

Patients often have to give the same information to several different medical staff in a hospital setting due the system of collecting information. Often, patients are unable to consistently remember all of the medications they are taking, which may ultimately lead to a physician prescribing incompatible drugs due to this lack of data. To rectify this situation, Vermont Information Technology Leaders (VITL) is implementing a system in several Vermont hospitals that will allow staff to access a computer network of accurate patient prescription records, saving valuable time in determining what medications a patient is taking and what medications should be avoided to prevent dangerous drug interactions. The system was introduced by VITL after conducting a physician survey; responding physicians indicated that obtaining medication histories often resulted in an acute lack of information.  The new system will collect data from pharmacy benefit managers about drugs, dosages, dates, and the number of refills that patients have been prescribed.
