Clinical & Business Intelligence Community

Let your voice be heard. Share your knowledge and ideas on how can HIMSS support your C&BI journey.

Clinical and business intelligence (C&BI) is the aggregation, analysis, and use of clinical, financial, operational, and non-traditional data captured inside and out of the healthcare setting to directly inform decision-making. Leveraging the power of C&BI will improve our nation’s entire healthcare system as well as the medical and economic wellness of patients.

HIMSS’ C&BI Community will help you leverage the power of C&BI to positively impact patient care delivery, health outcomes, and business operations through:

  • Sharing practical guidance and unbiased information on how to harness these healthcare data
  • Facilitating peer-to-peer networking, problem solving, solution sharing, and education
  • Engaging with peers and fellow industry leaders

Our virtual learning sessions feature topics such as:

  • Data aggregation and access through EDW, HIE, and cloud solutions
  • Data management, validation, quality, and integration
  • Descriptive, retrospective, predictive, and prescriptive analytics
  • Governance – data and program
  • Reporting, dashboards, and visualization techniques
  • Resource management
  • Population health management, including attribution and risk stratification
  • Precision medicine
  • Predictive modeling

Building and Deploying Healthcare IoT Solutions with Personalized Learning
January 25, 2018, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm ET

Speaker:

Deepak S. Turaga, Distinguished Research Staff Member | IBM Research AI

With the increasing prevalence of healthcare sensors, and their ability to communicate wirelessly, it is becoming possible to continuously monitor the health characteristics of individual users remotely. Furthermore, as these sensors communicate with smart phones, it is also possible to capture other contextual user behaviors (location, nutrition, activity etc.) that deeply influence their health.

This presentation describes a solution for monitoring diabetes patients remotely and provides them predictive alerts to avoid hypoglycemia and improve their health outcomes. As part of this solution, there is a need to integrate sensor data with context and build machine learning based predictive models to provide insights and alerts continuously to users. Interestingly, as users receive feedback, they modify their behaviors, often in unique ways, that requires quickly adapting any models to the individuals through personalization.

This presentation generalizes from this solution to describe the core characteristics of such applications, and the challenges for deploying adaptive and personalized machine learning in healthcare settings.

Contribute - C&BI Committee, Task Force, and Work Groups

The HIMSS C&BI Committee is responsible for creating thought leadership, resources and tools to support the needs of our members and the healthcare industry. Our area of focus will be to employ unbiased information to help healthcare organizations use C&BI to harness, use and analyze data captured in the healthcare setting to execute population health management initiatives and improve care and health outcomes.

  • The application period for this and all Committees generally opens in January.  Check back for more information.

The C&BI for Population Health Task Force creates resources and tools that employ practical guidance and unbiased information to help healthcare organizations (providers, hospitals, integrated delivery networks, health plans and other stakeholders) use C&BI to harness, use and analyze data captured in the healthcare setting to execute population health management initiatives and improve care and health outcomes.
