Transport Standards

These standards address the format of messages exchanged between computer systems, document architecture, clinical templates, user interface and patient data linkage. Standards center on “push” and “pull” methods for exchanging health information.

FHIR®

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is a HL7® standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically. It can be used as a stand-alone data exchange standard or used in partnership with existing widely used standards. FHIR resources are based on current HL7 standards. Some projects working on furthering FHIR’s adoption include SMART on FHIR, Argonaut and HAPI.

Direct

The Direct Project defines a set of standards and protocols to allow participants to send authenticated, encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet. Two primary Direct Project specifications are the Applicability Statement for Secure Health Transport and the XDR and XDM for Direct Messaging.

IHE

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) provides a number of specifications that can be used in the exchange of health information. A full list of IHE Profiles can be found on the IHE Wiki page.

DICOM

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is the standard for the communication and management of medical imaging​ information and related data.​ DICOM enables the transfer of medical images in across systems and facilitates the development and expansion of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).

HL7®

Health Level 7 (HL7) provides a number of standards that serve as the basis for many exchange standards currently used in health IT. HL7 standards serve as the underlying standards for FHIR and IHE.
