Meaningful Use & State Initiatives

Currently, Medicare requirements provide a common definition by which providers and hospitals will qualify for meaningful use. However, States can tailor the definition of meaningful use in four specific areas: (1) generate a list of patients by specific conditions; (2) the capability to submit electronic data to immunization registries of Immunization Information Systems; (3) the ability to submit electronic data on reportable lab results to public health agencies; and (4) the capacity to submit electronic syndromic surveillance data to public health agencies.
