Measure Results and Attain Metrics
To evaluate the success of patient engagement technologies, one can first report on basic metrics, such as the number of users per month (new and returning), the number of secure messages transmitted to and from provider, and the percentage of users per provider.
Success can be measured by surveying users:
Patients can be asked questions about usability – particularly, the ease of creating an account, logging in and their ability to explore features. In addition, patients should be asked about their ability to understand the content, particularly their own health data (e.g., lab results).
Providers can be asked to evaluate their satisfaction with their workflow, such as the release of results and notes, the management of prescription refill requests and the management of secure messages from patients.
The results of these measurements are key to making enhancements to patient engagement technologies.
