HIMSS: Please describe your current involvement with HIMSS and its benefits.
Parkulo: I have been a member of HIMSS for over 10 years and have participated at the annual conference as a presenter, reviewer and a member of the ACEC. I have also been a panelist at both regional and national HIMSS events. My participation with HIMSS has given me invaluable opportunities to interact and learn from peers, experts and leaders in the fields of health information and informatics. HIMSS has helped me advance my career, improve my institution and improve the care of my patients.
HIMSS: What do you hope to accomplish this year as the division chair of the HIMSS16 Annual Conference Education Committee?
Parkulo: As a division chair of the HIMSS16 ACEC, I hope to bring a diverse set of educational opportunities to the attendees. These offerings will come not only from experts in industry and government, but also, from groups around the country and world who are implementing solutions and improving patient care. I hope all attendees will find sessions that will give them new insight into what others throughout the world are achieving through health information as well as provide the ability to interact with colleagues and create relationships that will last long after HIMSS16 is over.
HIMSS: What are some of the highlights you anticipate for HIMSS16?
Parkulo: I anticipate HIMSS16 will highlight several emerging areas of health informatics, such as health information exchange, patient engagement, interoperability and big data analytics. I believe that the Meaningful Use program has positioned the US to deliver improved healthcare with lower costs. It will be up to medical providers, with HIMSS members leading the way, to deliver on that promise. I hope HIMSS16 will energize the attendees to continue the work necessary to deliver on that promise for America. (That and our keynotes, exhibition floor and Vegas, Baby!)
