HIMSS is equipping the health field to address cybersecurity challenges head-on with its new, interactive Cybersecurity Hub, an immersive learning environment aimed at de-mystifying the evolving cyber threat landscape for executives, healthcare providers, IT professionals, policymakers and the general public.
This first-of-its-kind, in-person exhibit provides visitors with the opportunity to interact with a series of standalone interactive modules, where they will be presented with various security-related scenarios and guided through different vendor solutions for addressing them. The multi-sensory journey demonstrates how various points of care connect through electronic data, the security risks that can be encountered and the latest solutions designed to mitigate risk.
Opening on Oct. 25: The hub is located within the HIMSS Innovation Center, the health IT floor of the Global Center for Health Innovation, in the heart of downtown Cleveland. It will be unveiled to the public with an opening reception on Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. ET. HIMSS North America Executive Vice President Carla Smith is scheduled to speak during the reception, after which attendees will be able to tour the hub. The opening launches a series of events focused on cybersecurity and innovation taking place at the HIMSS Innovation Center between Oct. 22 and 26.
“A strong cybersecurity framework is critical to our nation’s health infrastructure. We must protect patients’ safety and providers’ ability to deliver high-quality care,” Smith said. “At HIMSS, it’s our responsibility to help stakeholders understand the breadth of security challenges we face, and to effectively address these challenges. We believe that the educational information, product solutions and resources offered by the Cybersecurity Hub will be an important cornerstone in addressing these significant challenges.”

Given the frequency and severity of healthcare-related cyberattacks, many leaders consider cybersecurity an urgent priority. According to the 2016 HIMSS Cybersecurity Survey, more than 85 percent of health providers indicated that information security has increased as a business priority, and more than 70 percent indicated they have taken steps to improve their network security. Even so, most providers report being vulnerable to attacks and only moderately prepared to defend against them, according to the survey results.
