HIMSS Analytics recognizes Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences for revalidation of their status as a Stage 7 hospital as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM
CHICAGO (August 31, 2017) – People can perceive a lot about a healthcare organization based not only on their core values, but also, their commitment to them. Implementing an electronic medical record system (EMR) has enabled Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) to connect with their core values through the utilization of new tools and applications that have improved quality of patient care, safety and efficiency. Through the integration of a care assessment tool into the EMR, paired with excellent business intelligence tools and process redesign, the organization has decreased the average length of stay for discharged patients. These changes have resulted in more overall savings for the organization, which have been redeployed back into clinical services.
To further partner with patients in their care, Ontario Shores launched HealthCheck, a patient portal that allows patients to safely access their electronic health information through an online portal. Information involving current health conditions, lab results, visit history and medication can all be accessed through the Ontario Shores Electronic Health Record. Staff also benefit from improved communication and engagement with patients and their families.
Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) describes their mission as “bold and transforming,” and they’ve proved their willingness to transform their patient care based on the implementation—and now revalidation—of the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). This achievement reflects commitment to their values by ensuring the highest quality of care is met using electronic medical records (EMR). Found within a Stage 7 organization are an abundance of data, automated processes, easier access to information and clinical decision supports within its EMR. Ontario Shores is the first hospital in Canada to receive the HIMSS Analytics EMRAM Stage 7 revalidation.
“Ontario Shores has clearly demonstrated that they are a ‘learning organization’ by adapting to new models of mental health care delivery via their EMR,” stated John Hoyt, Stage 7 revalidation lead at HIMSS Analytics. “Acclimating their EMR to the mental health and addiction services environment is a complex endeavor that they have accomplished, as recognized by their revalidation as a HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 organization. They have a comprehensive set of multidisciplinary documentation tools that generate discrete data to serve their growing analytics function which is a growing challenge in mental health services. We are proud to revalidate Ontario Shores as an acute care Stage 7 organization.”
“Achieving Stage 7 revalidation reflects the high standard of quality at Ontario Shores and demonstrates how we are advancing care for individuals living with mental illness,” said Karim Mamdani, president and CEO at Ontario Shores. “Our electronic medical record system improves the delivery and quality of care that we provide and standardizes clinical documentation in an environment that is efficient, secure and collaborative.”
“Congratulations to Ontario Shores for this important and valuable achievement,” stated Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins. “Ontario Shores’ advanced electronic medical system is making their healthcare services faster, more efficient and more secure, which enables them to provide more seamless care for their patients.”
