Regenstrief Institute will collaborate with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) to unify terms for radiology procedures. The goal of this project is to produce a single unified source of names and codes for radiology procedures through a cooperative governance process. Daniel J. Vreeman, PT, DPT, MSc, Assistant Research Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Research Scientist at the Regenstrief Institute stated in a communication to the community:
“We think that creating standardized radiology procedure names will improve the quality, consistency and interoperability of radiology test results in electronic medical record systems and health information exchange.”
Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC)® which are maintained by the Regentrief Institute, Inc. will be used as the primary identifiers for radiology procedures with all attributes of the procedure names being linked back to the RESNA RadLex® reference ontology and respective RadLex Playbook, which is a lexicon of radiology orders and procedure step names. This collaboration will be funded under a contract with the National Institutes of Health.
