Veterans Day is a time of reflection. It is a day set aside to commemorate the sacrifice of Americans who have served in the U.S. military; those who have died fighting for our freedom, those who are now fighting, and those who will continue to fight in the future.
As I reflect on this day, I remember my first post to this blog exactly two years ago. The post announced the launch of the HIMSS Veterans Career Services (VCS) Initiative; the collaborative effort of HIMSS and Bellevue College funded by a Department of Labor grant. The program was developed to assist veterans, transitioning service members, eligible military spouses and survivors who are interested in pursuing careers within healthcare information technology.
Our current program offers professional development and career support resources that include: CAHIMS and CPHIMS certifications, monthly complimentary webinars, access to the HIMSS Jobmine, vMentorship, new Hero’s Welcome Membership for veterans new to HIMSS, and complimentary registration to other HIMSS events such as HIMSS16. We have also collaborated with our HIMSS Chapters to sponsor full travel honorariums for our VCS guests to attend annual conference. As of today, the following 11 chapters will be sponsoring 15 VCS attendees to HIMSS16: Central & Southern Ohio, Tennessee, Midwest Gateway, Virginia, Delaware Valley, Central and North Florida, West Virginia, Austin, New York, San Antonio and the Greater Chicago chapter.
Our HIMSS VCS event planning for HIMSS16 has been underway for months and we will host our second annual Veterans Career Services Boot Camp on Monday, 29 Feb 2016. The full-day event will include educational sessions, keynote speaker and industry led round-table discussions focused on HIMSS16 key topic areas: Connected Health/Mobile, Cybersecurity/Privacy, Big Data/Data Analytics, Clinical and Business Intelligence, Clinical Informatics and Clinician Engagement, EHRs/Meaningful Use, Health Information Exchange and Interoperability and IT Infrastructure, HIT Standards and Medical Device Integration. This special event and full HIMSS16 conference registration is complimentary to our VCS guests. If interested in attending, participating or sponsoring, please contact Amy Justice.
On this Veterans Day, please take moment to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, and thank those that have served and continue to serve our great United States of America. I could not be more proud of my military service and to have been a part of the HIMSS Veterans Career Services Initiative.
