Parkland Health & Hospital System, a 2017 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award recipient, has a long and storied history. After its opening in May of 2015, Parkland became one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the nation. Serving the citizens of Dallas County in a new 2.1 million square foot facility, demonstrates the value of health information and technology through the use of mobile communications to enable interventions to reduce sepsis mortality, more effectively screen their patient population for suicide risk, and reduce readmissions through the innovative use of technology to support self-administration of IV antibiotics.

With the use of daily compliance and risk stratification reports, Parkland is able to measure the level of compliance and identify patients with AMA or LBTC disposition. As of August 2017, more than 1.6 million screenings were completed. Close to 7% of patients in the Emergency Department/Urgent Care Unit, report suicide risk. Parkland also has a compliance rate that is greater than 98%.
One example of innovation through mobile solutions utilized by Parkland included sepsis alerts that aggregate multiple patient specific variables in real time to estimate risk of a patient being classified as septic. Parkland’s sepsis bundle compliance improved from 14% to 29%. The average and median length of stay reductions for Sepis POA patients were 21.5% and 12.6%, respectively.
