Educating, Connecting, Leading: Recognizing Our Outstanding Chapters

I am honored to recognize all 55 chapters of HIMSS throughout North America, Puerto Rico, Canada and India. Our local volunteers, who have an immense passion for health information and technology, lead our HIMSS chapters.

I am continuously astounded by the outstanding accomplishments of the chapters of HIMSS. Chapters offer education, events, networking, advocacy, certification preparation, career advancement, scholarships, volunteer opportunities and much more to the more than 62,000 chapter members. In fiscal year 2017, our more than 750 chapter leader volunteers produced nearly 1,200 hours of educational programming for chapter members.

Although the awardee selection is tough, the criteria is fully transparent and the process is led by peer volunteers from our very knowledgeable and experienced Chapters Task Force.

Chapter of the Year

Chapter of the Year nominees receive scores based on their chapter engagement, service to members, communication, recruitment, education/professional development, leadership training, advocacy and innovation. I am proud to say the fiscal year 2017 award-winning chapters excelled in all categories.

• Large Chapter of the Year: Dallas/Ft Worth

• Medium Chapter of the Year: Indiana

• Small Chapter of the Year: Louisiana

Presley Collins, president, Dallas Fort Worth Chapter of HIMSS, described what this award means to the chapter.

“Truly indescribable. While the award itself was unexpected, the achievement was undeniably earned through years of hard work, determination and steadfast dedication. The chapter has always had the high standard to be the best chapter for intrinsic reasons – sheer pride and a continuous pursuit to advance healthcare through technology innovation for the benefit of our members. This board and its members embodies excellence through team work – a deserving recognition of an outstanding team that gets it done and does it well.”

Gabriela Mustata Wilson, PhD, MSc, FHIMSS, president, Indiana Chapter of HIMSS shared the best part about being a HIMSS chapter leader.

“Being a chapter leader provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the support of a very well-established and respected organization, such as HIMSS, and have an impact in our communities toward the advancement of health IT to help improve healthcare. There is nothing more rewarding than joining forces with many others to educate community and policy stakeholders on the value of health IT for the US healthcare system. Every day, I feel so very blessed to lend my talents and skills to such a remarkable organization, to volunteer alongside such caring and talented people, and to live, work and raise my family in a state that has so much talent and generous spirit!”

Chapter Leader of the Year

HIMSS is lucky to have very talented chapter leader volunteers. The Chapter Leader of the Year nomination highlights the tenure of the individual touching on: leadership skills, goals, vision, implementation of new programs/ideas, collaboration, development of other leaders and overall impact on the chapter.

• Chapter Leader of the Year:

Chad Cothern, RN, BSN, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, Louisiana Chapter of HIMSS, Fiscal Year 2017 President

During his years of service to HIMSS at both the chapter and national levels, Mr. Cothern has led by example, giving freely of his time and energy to improve the chapter. That passion for making things better and the desire to see the chapter reach its full potential has fueled many of the key developments during his tenure with Louisiana HIMSS.

“Mr. Cothern's active leadership in Louisiana shows delegation, leadership, motivation and management skills. He provides guidance and mentoring to members and encourages members with relevant knowledge, wisdom and experience to do the same.”

I encourage you to share a big congratulations to these hardworking chapters and chapter leader. Their passion towards the HIMSS mission has touched thousands of lives. We are so fortunate to have these volunteers share their time and talents with us.
