HIMSS Communities Carnival at HIMSS18
On Tuesday, March 6, from 5:00-6:30 pm PT the Palazzo Ballroom at the Venetian will transform into the HIMSS Communities Carnival showcasing the wonderful opportunities HIMSS offers. Davies Enterprise Award Winner Henry Ford Health Systems for Using EHRs To Improve Heart Health
Henry Ford Health System is honored as a HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award recipient for the steps it has taken to fight heart disease through the use of their digital health technology.
The organization noticed a higher-than-average national average rate of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In order to control and prevent the condition, Henry Ford Health System created a standardized protocol to use in its five hospitals.
In their internal process improvement initiative to reduce VTE incidences through their electronic health record (EHR), the organization:
- Developed a new VTE real-time measurement model for administering medication,
- Developed dashboards showing VTE trends by location and patient care unit and patient data marts charting VTE prophylaxis and treatment by patients and flagging patients who missed or refused prophylaxis,
- Educated nurses and patients to reduce avoidable missed/refused prophylaxis.

Measuring and Pioneering Informatics at Sutter Health
Sutter Health is a not-for-profit unified health care network providing comprehensive medical care in more than 100 Northern California cities and towns. Sutter has 53,000 employees and 12,000 physicians in their network, making them the 8th largest health system in the U.S. The informatics journey began when Sutter partnered with Epic, taking the first of 24 hospitals "live" in 2008 and continued through 2016. Today, Sutter Health continues to build a nursing informatics team to improve safety, increase efficiency, and add value for patients and clinicians.
