Health IT Standards Committee Discusses Comments on 2015 Edition EHR Certification Criteria NPRM

Blum to Step Down from CMS
This week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the departure of its Principal Deputy Administrator, Jonathan Blum. Click the link for details.

HHS Announces HIPAA Breach Settlements
In announcing settlements with two entities totaling nearly $2 million, the HHS Office for Civil Rights said “these major enforcement actions underscore the significant risk to the security of patient information posed by unencrypted laptop computers and other mobile devices.”  Click the link for details.

Hardship Exception Applications due July 1, 2014 for EPs
This week, CMS distributed an email stating that they are accepting applications for hardship exceptions to avoid the upcoming Medicare payment adjustment for the 2013 reporting year. Click the link for details and tipsheets.

The HIMSS regulatory chart offers an at-a-glance snapshot of all health IT-related regulation HIMSS is following in 2014. The chart includes links to proposed and final regulations and to HIMSS comments and position statements, along with anticipated timelines.

House to Hold Hearing on Medicare Waste, Fraud, & Abuse
The Subcommittee on Health of the House Ways and Means Committee has announced that it will hold an April 30th hearing to “focus on the different Agencies’ roles and missions in curbing the fraud, waste, and abuse within the Medicare program.” Click the link to learn more.

Congress Looks at Telemedicine
Last week, attendees at the Institute for e-Health Policy briefing on Capitol Hill heard from staff of several members of Congress (Sen. John Thune, and Reps. Glenn Thompson, Greg Harper, and Mike Thompson) who have sponsored legislation related to telehealth. Click the link above to view the telehealth legislation they’ve introduced.
