Federal Affairs

CMS and ONC Discuss 2014 Attestations and Stage 2 Functionality Adoption
The Health IT Policy Committee met on May 6, 2014, for its monthly meeting, and received reports from CMS and ONC on Meaningful Use EHR adoption.  CMS released additional information on providers paid for the 2014 program year, attestations for the 2014 reporting year, and a report on registration and payment data for the EHR Incentive Program through March 2014.  Click the link to read HIMSS’ full meeting summary and access the presentations.

Multiple Stakeholders Testify at ONC Certification Hearing
On Wednesday, May 7th, a number of providers, vendors, private sector representatives and all the current certification/accreditation bodies gathered to provide testimony to the Health IT Policy Committee (HITPC) during its Certification Hearing. New ONC issue brief: Health IT for Public Health Reporting
A new ONC issue brief, Health IT for Public Health Reporting and Information Systems, discusses how using health IT tools, electronic reporting of public health data replaces traditional paper-based and fax reporting. Click the link to access the report.

HIMSS Regulatory Chart Tracks Health IT Regulations
The HIMSS regulatory chart offers an at-a-glance snapshot of all health IT-related regulation HIMSS is following in 2014. The chart includes links to proposed and final regulations and to HIMSS comments and position statements, along with anticipated timelines.

Congressional Affairs

House Passes Bill That Promotes DOD-VA Data Integration and Interoperability
By a vote of 416-1, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 4486, the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Fiscal Year 2015 Appropriations Act. This bill in part provides the funding necessary for the VA to modernize its claims backlog by digitizing patient records or working with the Department of Defense (DoD) to create an interoperable records system to ensure that electronic health records are transferred flawlessly when a soldier transitions into the VA system. The Institute for e-Health Policy will host an all-day briefing in July, entitled Rapid Technology Advances in Military Medicine and Veterans Health Care: Research and Development Meets Fielded Care.”Click the link to learn more about the bill and the event.

HHS Secretary Nominee Appears Before Senate HELP Committee
On Thursday, May 8, 2014, Sylvia Matthews Burwell, the President’s nominee for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) appeared before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) for the first Senate hearing pertaining to her possible confirmation to lead HHS.

HIMSS joins the American Nurses Association and the Alliance for Nursing Informatics and numerous other partners in celebrating National Nurses Week, May 6-12. The purpose of this week-long celebration is to raise awareness of the value of nursing and help educate the public about the role nurses play in meeting the healthcare needs of Americans.
