Thirteenth annual HIMSS Policy Summit was a day and a half of Congressional fly-in for HIMSS members and other registrants. The participants visited their members of Congress or staff to explain HIMSS top three Congressional Asks and discuss health IT accomplishments and potential.

During National Health IT Week the Senate Special Committee roundtable discussion focused on Assisting the Aging through Health IT.


Representative. Ellmers Introduces “Flex-IT” Act
The Flexibility In Health IT Reporting Act (Flex-IT Act) was introduced by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT). In a statement, Ellmers said the bill “would afford the ‘flexibility providers need while ensuring that the goal of upgrading their technologies is still being managed.’”


House of Representatives Passes IMPACT Act
This week, both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate voted on and passed The Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transformation Act of 2014 (IMPACT) ACT  which seeks to standardize patient assessment data, quality measures and resource use measures.It also includes language that was featured in another bill –the Hospice Opportunities for Supporting Patients with Integrity and Care Evaluations (HOSPICE) Act. The measure is now cleared for the president's signature.

HIMSS comments to the Department of Health and Human Services in response to Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Modifications to the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive Programs for 2014;and Health InformationTechnology.


AMA Releases EHR “Action Plan” Focused on Usability
The American Medical Association (AMA) called for solutions to EHR systems that have neglected usability as a necessary feature. The AMA released a new framework outlining eight priorities for improving EHR usability to benefit caregivers and patients.

ICD-10: When 54 Weeks is Really 37 Weeks
It has been nearly six months since the President signed into law language delaying the implementation of ICD-10 until at least Oct. 1, 2015. In the six months since the announcement CMS passed a Final Rule officially establishing Oct. 1, 2015 as the new implementation date, launched their roadto10.org website, announced 2015 acknowledgement testing dates and participated in multiple webinars and town meetings reaffirming their commitment to that date.
