Volunteers wanted! HIMSS is pleased to announce the open application period for HIMSS Committees. In this key role, available for a term of two fiscal years, committee volunteers play an instrumental part in leading and executing the strategic initiatives of HIMSS while building a strong network and expanding professional development opportunities. Committee participation is open to all HIMSS members who are not currently serving in other leadership positions within the Society, and have maintained active membership for at least the past 12 consecutive months. Health Subcommittee Holds Two Day Hearing on Permanent SGR Solution
On Wednesday, January 21st, The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health began two days of hearings seeking a permanent solution to the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate meant to control for Medical physician inflation. 

Senate Bill Would Repeal Medical Device Tax
Senators from both sides of the aisle, led by Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch, have introduced legislation to repeal the medical device tax authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act 2010 (ACA) Signed March 23, 2010 (PL 111-148, PL 111-152).

President Obama’s State of the Union Emphasizes Economic Recovery, Stays Course on Healthcare
President Barack Obama delivered his sixth State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 20, confronted with new Republican majorities in Congress.  The address centered on his economic policy proposals, known as “middle–class economics”, which were repeatedly touted.

ONC Announces First Chief Health Information Officer
On January 21st, Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH, MSc, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, announced Michael James McCoy, MD, as the Office of the National Coordinator’s Chief Health Information Officer, a newly created position, effective January 26, 2015.

FDA Issues Two New Guidance Documents
On Tuesday, January 20, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued guidance documents on general wellness products and medical device accessories.  FDA guidance documents only convey the agency’s current thinking on a particular topic and should really only be viewed as recommendations.
