A Pharmacist's Pathway to Informatics

By Afton Y. Wagner, PharmD, Senior Manager, Federal Affairs & Pharmacy Initiatives, HIMSS North America

When I began my pharmacy school journey in 2001, I was not aware of the diversity in career paths I could choose as a medical professional. Like many other pharmacy students, I believed that I could pick one of two tracks after graduation to include working in a hospital or retail community pharmacy. My view quickly changed thanks to a mentor.

Value Brief

Introducing the Re-Imagined HIMSS Value Suite Site

In a recent blog post, Rod Piechowski, senior director, health information systems, HIMSS North America, introduced the newly designed HIMSS Value Suite website.

HIMSS redesigned the Health IT Value Suite so it can better act as a resource to help identify how well organizations drive value out of its digital health technologies and associated processes.

The new Health IT Value Suite brings all of HIMSS's value-focused resources together:

  • Value Score
  • Guides to Value, and
  • Davies Award of Excellence.

What are the STEPS to Finding Value?

In 2013, HIMSS created the Health IT Value Suite, which involved collecting examples of measurable value from the use of digital health by physicians, hospitals and other organizations.

As the collection grew, HIMSS was able to identify patterns. From those patterns HIMSS created the Health IT STEPS framework, which provides the healthcare industry with a language around value so that healthcare stakeholders can talk more clearly about it, seek it out, and learn to measure it.

In 2017, HIMSS redesigned its new Health IT Value Suite, so it can better act as a resource healthcare providers can use to help identify how well an organization drives value out of its digital health technologies and associated processes.

The HIMSS Health IT Value Suite and its STEPS framework can also be used to help identify opportunities to drive more value from people, processes and technology. How did others do it? What were their outcomes?

Learn more about the STEPS to Value framework, and discover ways other organizations have found value.
