New York HIE Gets Direct Messaging
By Anthony Brino, Associate Editor, Healthcare Payer News and Government Health IT
Clinician-to-clinician Direct messaging is now available across New York as part of the Statewide Health Information Network of New York, or SHIN-NY. Albany Medical Center, one of the busiest trauma centers in Upstate New York, will be the state’s first provider using the Direct service, which integrates into providers’ electronic health record systems. Vendor certification for Direct messaging will begin this spring through the Interoperability Workgroup led by the New York eHealth Collaborative, which oversees SHIN-NY. For Albany Medical Center, the Direct service is being powered by the Healthcare Information Xchange of New York (HIXNY), which serves as greater Albany and northern New York’s regional HIE. National Coordinator for Health IT Farzad Mostashari, MD, said in a media release that the SHIN-NY Direct service is “a critical component for eligible providers to achieve Stage 2 Meaningful Use in New York while enabling a simple point-to-point exchange of patient health data.” Click the link above to learn more.

Minnesota Beacon a True Partner to Patients
Embracing that slogan, the Southeast Minnesota Beacon Community took a conversational approach to developing a slate of community activities in its region, rather than an authoritarian attitude. SE MN Beacon did not impose an action plan on the patients and stakeholders within its boundaries. Instead, they used “meaningful conversation” to emphasize a patient-centric orientation, according to Christopher Chute, MD, professor of medical informatics at Mayo Clinic and the principal investigator at SE MN Beacon. SE MN Beacon includes 5 health systems, 11 counties and public health departments, as well as 47 school districts. All providers in the region are partnering and participating in the Beacon. Central Illinois HIE Plans for Other Side of Tipping Point
By Mary Mosquera, Senior Editor, Healthcare Finance News
Unlike many health information exchanges, the Central Illinois Health Information Exchange (CIHIE) is teetering at the tipping point for connecting and sharing data among a large number of providers in its region. Due to its effective grassroots approach to community engagement, CIHIE no longer has to go out and sell its benefits, reported Joy Duling, executive director of CIHIE, at Monday’s session, “HIE: a Grassroots Approach”, at the 2013 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition. Grassley, Hatch Ask, How Does Sequester Affect Exchanges?
On March 27th, Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, inquiring how the "Sequester" (the $1.2 trillion to be cut from federal budgets over ten years, beginning on March 1, 2013) would affect setup of the nation's health insurance exchanges. According to the senators' letter, to date, HHS has awarded more than $1 billion to 33 states for health insurance exchange planning and establishment. Click the link above to read the full letter.

CCD Exchange between Different Care Settings & Vendors – New IHE USA White Paper!
By Sarah Willis, HIMSS IHE-USA Liaison
The healthcare industry has been working for decades to align data and clinical content to improve coordinated care. The HITECH Act and Meaningful Use Stage 2 require the use of Continuity of Care Document (CDD) and set the foundation for standards-based clinical content. This white paper Establishing Communities of Health Through Live Exchange of Patient Summaries, presented by IHE USA in collaboration with Greenway Medical Technologies and Epic examines one project in which live CCD exchanges occur between a hospital and group practice using separate EHR systems from different EHR developers. Opinion

The Woodstock of Interoperability
by John Paganini, MBA, CPHIMS, CIIP, HIMSS Interoperability Showcase Committee and Board Member of Northern Ohio Chapter of HIMSS (NOHIMSS)

The opening act of the Interoperability Showcase started with a short presentation by a talented speaker who shared information in a fun and engaging approach which included a HIMSS memory stick giveaway.  In order to qualify, an attendee has to answer the question “what do the letters IHE stand for”?

Not surprisingly yet interestingly, many attendees guessed that letters “I” stood for Interoperability, “H” for Healthcare (which was correct) and “E” stood for Exchange. The answer was soon revealed as attendees found out that IHE stood for “Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise."

This validated that we must continue to get the message out about the fantastic work that IHE is doing to further interoperability and exchange of healthcare information. And attending the Interoperability Showcase was one of the best ways to learn about IHE.

Interoperability Is the Paradigm Shift in Healthcare
By Adam Bazer, HIMSS Staff

Within our nation’s hospitals and doctors’ offices, marathons are being run.  Not along a peaceful or invigorating path, but between exam room 1 and 2, off to 4 and then over to 3.   Short shuffle steps around a colleague, as you both hurry off to the next patient.  From this patient’s perspective, I imagine, like all long distance runners, there is a certain amount of isolation to that daily grind of 26 miles 2 steps at a time.
