2013 HIMSS / AVIA Innovation Survey Executive Summary

Healthcare is currently undergoing a period of rapid and unprecedented change as providers transition towards business models focused on shared risk, accountability, and value-based compensation. Concurrently, implementation of electronic health record (EHR) platforms has hit critical mass, enabling organizations to look beyond implementation and more towards data use. For many, the hope is that innovation will become the vehicle by which their organizations can adapt and thrive in this new environment.

HIMSS and AVIA collaborated on this research study to:

  1. gain a better understanding of the state of innovation within provider organizations and;
  2. to obtain a grasp on how providers are leveraging this capability within their organizations.

The 2013 Healthcare Provider Innovation Survey reveals details about hospitals and health systems and their appetite for innovation. Additionally, the results uncover factors tied to successful piloting/implementation for internally-generated innovations and/or externally-developed solutions.
