Terri J. Sanders, MPH, is Vice President of Global Marketing & Communications for HIMSS, a global, cause-based, not-for-profit organization focused on better health through information and technology. With more than 15 years of experience, Terri J. Sanders is an award-winning marketing, communications and brand strategist.

Terri began her career as a Business Leadership Executive Fellow for Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). At BCBSA, she learned the full scope of the corporate enterprise from Strategy, Finance and Operations to Policy, Marketing and Business Development. As a Consultant and Project Manager, she developed clinical programs for the Blues system at large, building and nurturing relationships with leading healthcare advocacy groups and associations. She was integral to the development and launch of the Cardiac Centers of Excellence and designed the Cancer Centers of Excellence with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. During her time at BCBSA, she was a dedicated member of the Diversity Council.

She later served as a Manager in Enterprise Strategic Services for Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC). Here, Terri was assigned to manage a $400 million Service-the-Member portfolio encompassing subscriber services, claims and interorganizational programs. In this role, she was responsible for the portfolio vision, branding and marketing plan alignment with corporate strategy as well as project prioritization, budget development and management. Terri helped to ensure cohesion across the enterprise’s four subsidiaries and served as the liaison to the executive team on behalf of the portfolio’s 20 projects and teams.

While at HCSC, Terri was asked to launch and lead a marketing and communications program for AIM Specialty Health, a newly purchased subsidiary of Anthem, Inc. (then WellPoint). As the head of Strategic Marketing and Communications, she drove business development, leading strategic marketing communications campaigns and the proposal process, significantly increasing the company’s reach and revenue. Terri oversaw creative and digital media, and worked on more than 145 client and product implementations during her tenure. She also worked closely with product development to bring new ideas to market earning recognition from the Chicago Innovation Awards. Terri is most proud of her work as the Diversity Council Vice Chair and Chair, building a comprehensive inclusion program, and leading the Community Service program for the state of Illinois’ nearly 500 employees.

Terri later joined The Chartis Group as the Director of External Communications to help create a new functional area. This role quickly expanded to include all branding, marketing and communications including: strategic planning, content, campaign management, creative, PR, digital media, agency management and team operations. During her tenure, she helped launch nine new and expanded service offerings, including three Centers of Excellence and supported the acquisition and branding of three new entities. Terri managed the rebranding of the firm, launching two new websites that earned 11 industry awards. Her efforts drove new levels of brand awareness in the marketplace for the firm, contributing to its growth.

In addition to her formal career, Terri has served as an advisor to companies looking to increase their market presence and strengthen their brand for more than a decade. Terri holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She also holds a Master of Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Terri has certifications in Multi-Channel Integrated Marketing Communications, Advertising and Public Relations Essentials, Social Media and Professional Business Writing from DePaul University’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Business. She is a proud inaugural member of the Forbes Communications Council, and a former member of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association and the International Society of Business Communicators. She is the founder of a networking and support community in Chicago, and the co-host of a local news and current events forum for women.
