How Might We Improve Care Experiences by Improving Provider Experiences?
Blood transfusion errors caused by patient misidentification can cause catastrophic morbidity or mortality. Nursing informaticists at a large academic healthcare system redesigned the patient identification verification process during blood transfusion administration in the operating room using barcode scanning and a dual patient identification band. This process ensures consistency in positive patient identification to reduce the risk of transfusion errors.
The second installment will explore the following learning objectives:
- Examine the reasons to improve processes for positive patient identification and bar code scanning of blood products in the operating room setting.
- Explore and identify a plan to implement barcode scanning technology for patient identification in the operating room setting using dual identification bands.
- Addressing change management considerations for successful implementation of Bar Code Scanning in the operating room setting.
