ePatient 2020 - How Advances in Nutrition IT Break Down Care Silos and Improve Patient Outcomes | Northern California Chapter of HIMSS

Having the right clinical data at the right time is necessary for providers to make the best patient care decisions. However, siloed organizational infrastructures, insufficient tools, and lack of interoperability have made it difficult to accomplish this need. This is especially true for communicating clinical insights between Registered Dietitians (RDs) and the rest of the physician-led patient care team. Nevertheless, there have been significant developments in nutrition HL7 standards, malnutrition best practice guidelines, and an increased awareness of the impact malnutrition care has on patient outcomes that are driving real changes in the industry.

Margaret K. Dittloff, MS RD

Margaret Dittloff, MS RD, is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Product Manager with over 20 years of experience in software development for the healthcare industry. She holds a Master of Science in clinical nutrition from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and a Bachelor of Science in food service management from Iowa State University.

Prior to joining Junum in 2019, Margaret was the Research Project Manager at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, where she managed the Academy’s Health Informatics Outcomes data registry and applications, which were among the first apps to demonstrate integrations using HL7 FHIR at HIMSS 2018 Interoperability Showcase.  She also worked as the Director of Product Management for CBORD’s nutrition/diet office management solutions, as well as numerous management positions in contract foodservice operations from college and university dining to community nutrition programs for seniors.

Margaret is an active contributor to Health Level Seven (HL7) where she has worked to advance and incorporate the Nutrition Care Process into national and international interoperability standards including—Nutrition Orders Domain Analysis Model, HL7 Version 3 Nutrition Orders Clinical Messages, and the FHIR Nutrition Order Resource. She continues to be active informatics leader within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is currently serving as the Academy’s HIMSS Alliance representative.

Jenni Bendfeldt, MHA, FHIMSS

Recognized as a Rising Star in healthcare, Jenni has a deep understanding of hospital/provider operations, technology, market trends, and clinical specialties. She began her career as a dietitian and holds a Bachelor of Science in nutritional science/dietetics with a minor in psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She went on to obtain her Master’s in Healthcare Administration from Suffolk University and began working at Tufts Medical Center in Boston in ambulatory operations and EHR implementations.

She founded RecastHealth in 2018 to help companies, including Junum, navigate the complexities of the healthcare industry, connect with one another, and deploy innovative solutions. Prior to founding RecastHealth, Jenni spent 6 years as a consultant with the industry’s top consulting firm, where she led numerous high-profile projects for large health systems.

Jenni begins her term as president of NorCal HIMSS in July 2020. She previously served as Secretary of the Board of Directors, Membership Chair, and contributed to a number of chapter-sponsored events and thought leadership. Jenni is a guest lecturer at UC Berkeley’s Future of Healthcare class and has published several articles related to digital health innovations over the years.
