“First Do No Harm” Meets “Fail Fast”: Healthcare Cultures Collide

Thursday, April 20 at 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM CT
South Building, Level 1 | S104

The COVID-19 pandemic thrust both patient/employee safety and rapid digital innovation into the national spotlight. It also surfaced a growing tension between traditional healthcare ethos and the “tech start-up” culture of many information technology (IT) developers in the health market. How does the healthcare workforce navigate this changing landscape? A focus on High Reliability Organization (HRO) and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) principles provides benefits to both the people who do the work and the information systems that support them. In this session, we’ll examine findings from research and practical experience about efforts to shape behaviors, practices and processes to help healthcare and technology professionals work safe, work smart and learn together.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare the overarching cultural philosophies guiding the healthcare and information technology workforce
  • Describe the principles and measures of success in a healthcare high reliability organization (HRO)
  • Map principles and measure of healthcare HRO to the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) technology framework that is widely used in the design and development of health information technology (IT)
  • Discuss approaches from HRO and SAFe to build high performing teams – from the surgical suite to the scrum stand-up
