Quest for the Perfect Healthcare System - How Do We Get There?

Wednesday, April 19 at 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM CT
South Building, Level 4 | S401

From the free-at-the-point of use NHS to the highly remunerated USA system and everything in between, health systems worldwide are as varied and diverse as the wildlife of Madagascar and all have their pros and cons. This session will bring together health system geeks and gurus from across the globe to share lessons from the best and worst aspects of some of the world’s leading healthcare systems and debate what the ‘perfect’ system could look like in a digital age, combining the strongest elements of each. The aim of this session will be to offer practical guidance on how national healthcare systems can evolve towards more sustainable, equitable models that better support the needs of the people they serve in a data rich world, whatever their starting point. We will particularly look at the role of digital health now and in the future in optimisation of health systems and how the increased use of information and technology is expanding their boundaries, capacities and capabilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare the pros and cons of different national health systems and the strategies and practices worth replicating.
  • Evaluate how to create the ‘optimal’ system combining the best elements from different countries
  • Examine how digital health is disrupting traditional models and approaches to system design and delivery
  • Discuss how to build a modern, equitable and sustainable health system without starting from scratch
