How Smart is Your Community? Defining the Role of Health IT Modernization in the Smart Communities-Cities Movement
Smart Communities-Cities are the precursors of the movement toward local governmental systems modernization and innovation.
Leveraging public-private partnerships, Smart Communities-Cities are positioned to address population health and wellness goals through the application of trusted, secure, innovative technologies, data analytics and advanced communications.
Smart Cities and Communities may be most impactful when they are able to interoperate across core health, human services and non-health sector systems including the following six critical domains:
- Health systems (including public health)
- Public safety
- Environmental health
- Human and social services
- Emergency medical services
Interoperating or integrating these systems and services in Smart Communities-Cities policies and practices should enable timely response to health crises, improve health outcomes; meet Quadruple Aim1 goals and support the interconnected health and wellness goals of communities across the globe.
Moreover, we anticipate transportation and communications/public affairs as key to public sector health related transformation. Transportation, both public and rideshare is now an extension of the continuum of care equation and digital communications strategies will be the foundation for socializing these initiatives across the citizenship whether through traditional media, word of mouth, or through social networks and apps.
HIMSS encourages local communities, cities, and state governments to consider including health objectives in their efforts to become Smart.
No Community is smart if its solutions do not support or address population health outcomes.
