Certification Beta Test

To reflect changes in the healthcare information and technology field, HIMSS has updated our existing CPHIMS and CAHIMS exams. Changes are being made to eligibility criteria and the scope of content covered on the exam. Review a complete list of changes for CPHIMS and CAHIMS.

What’s the cost?

CAHIMS

  • HIMSS Organizational Affiliate Member: $190 U.S.
  • HIMSS Member (excludes Chapter Only and Online Only members): $240 U.S.
  • Non-Member: $315 U.S..

CPHIMS

  • HIMSS Organizational Affiliate Member: $375 U.S.
  • HIMSS Member (excludes Chapter Only and Online Only members): $405 U.S.
  • Non-Member: $525 U.S.
     

If you do not pass the beta exam, there will be no charge to retake the exam one (1) additional time.

How do I prepare for the exam?

Please review the exam specifications for CPHIMS and CAHIMS as well as a list of references to study. You will need to bring your own laptop and it must be a Windows-enabled operating system. If you do not have a Windows-enabled laptop, please email us so we can determine if we can make arrangements for you.

The beta test consists of 130 questions. Beta exam test takers are given three (3) hours to complete the exam. All candidates will be sent their results after the conclusion of the beta test period.

CPHIMS Eligibility Criteria

Beginning with applications submitted after December 31, 2019, candidates will need to meet the following criteria. Please note that candidates taking the beta test must also met these requirements:

To qualify to take the CPHIMS examination and earn CPHIMS certification, you must either:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and
  • Have five years of information and management systems* experience, with three of those years in a healthcare setting**.

OR

  • Hold a graduate degree or higher from an accredited college or university and
  • Have three years of information and management systems* experience, with two of those years in a healthcare setting**.

OR

  • NEW - Have at least ten years of information and management systems* experience, with eight of those years in a healthcare setting**.

*Information and management systems experience includes work in the following areas: Systems analysis; Design; Selection, implementation, support, and maintenance; Testing and evaluation; Privacy and security; Information systems; Clinical informatics; Management engineering;
**A healthcare setting includes: Experience with a provider of health services or products to a healthcare facility (e.g., hospital; healthcare consulting firm; vendor; federal, state, or local government office; academic institution; payer; public health, etc.)

What does the updated CPHIMS exam look like?

The beta exam is broken down into four (4) content areas:

  • Healthcare and Technology Environments – 25%
  • Clinical Informatics – 20%
  • Healthcare Information and Management Systems (includes: Analysis; Design; Selection, Implementation, Support and Maintenance; Testing and Evaluation; Privacy and Security) – 30%
  • Management and Leadership – 25%

CAHIMS Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the CAHIMS exam candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent

What does the updated CAHIMS exam look like?

The exam is broken down into four (4) content areas:

  • Healthcare and Technology Environments – 27%
  • Clinical Informatics – 26%
  • Healthcare Information and Management Systems (includes: Analysis; Design; Selection, Implementation, Support and Maintenance; Testing and Evaluation; Privacy and Security) – 33%
  • Management and Leadership – 14%
