Supporting the next generation
Since 1996, The HIMSS Foundation has empowered the next generation of leaders, equipping them with educational and professional opportunities to drive positive change within the health tech ecosystem. Through $260,000+ in scholarships, two diversity-focused educational programs, grants, internships and externships, we’ve provided educational and professional opportunities to students pursuing their education in digital health, information and management systems.

Scholarships
We’re all about celebrating excellence in our student community. The HIMSS foundation offers scholarships that serve as stepping stones for future health information and technology leaders. These awards aren’t just about money — they’re about opening doors. Recipients receive financial awards and complimentary access to the HIMSS Global Health Conference and Exhibition (restrictions may apply). View previous recipients and meet our 2025 recipients.

HIMSS Foundation undergraduate/graduate candidate scholarships
The HIMSS Foundation awards two $5,000 scholarships annually to one undergraduate and one graduate student — undergraduate applicants must be at least first-term juniors. The application requires a resume or CV and one letter of recommendation (not from Selection Committee judges). Applicants must be current HIMSS Student Members in good standing, enrolled in accredited programs related to health information technology or healthcare management systems.
Applicants cannot be currently employed by HIMSS, engaged in a consulting contract with any component of HIMSS, or serving on HIMSS Board of Directors or any HIMSS Advisory Boards. Scholarship judges and previous HIMSS Foundation Scholarship recipients are also exempt.

Internships
The HIMSS Foundation provides hands-on experiences for undergraduate and graduate students in areas like policy development, informatics and health association management to help advance their careers. Student applications are accepted on a rolling basis for the winter, summer and fall semesters.

Public policy
The public policy internship program provides leadership and professional development experiences for undergraduate and graduate students interested in healthcare and public policy. Whether in the Washington D.C. office or remote, these internships offer unique opportunities to learn about federal and state governments and gain valuable work experience. Grants
Through grant funding, the HIMSS Foundation provides opportunities for current and emerging professionals to diversify the digital health workforce.

HIMSS Professional Certification Grant
The HIMSS Foundation has partnered with the HIMSS Global Health Equity Network to offer this grant to help prepare underrepresented health information and technology professionals and students to attain either the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS®) or the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS®) certification.
The 2025 HIMSS Foundation Professional Certification Grant for Minority Professionals and Students is currently underway. We plan to support another cohort in 2026. Watch for more information and the application period to open Fall 2025.

King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh has become the first facility in the world to achieve Stage 7 on the modernized HIMSS Analytics Maturity Assessment Model. KAMC had previously reached Stage 6 on AMAM in 2020 and followed up with a Stage 7 validation in 2021 under the previous version of the model. The modernized AMAM, introduced in 2024, provides a robust framework for evaluating and enhancing health systems’ analytics strategies, data governance practices, and the integration and effective use of artificial intelligence.

HIMSS and Data Security Council of India Sign Memorandum of Understanding for Workforce Development and Cybersecurity Analysis
HIMSS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Data Security Council of India to collaborate on workforce development and conduct a national-level market analysis of cybersecurity in India. HIMSS will collaborate with DSCI to create and publish a cybersecurity report and market analysis of India’s cybersecurity posture. Together, the organizations will develop the scope of work, identify key stakeholders, and garner participation from representative hospitals. The cybersecurity report will become a valuable advocacy tool for advancing and investing in India's cybersecurity.

Second Annual HIMSS Native American & Indigenous Symposium Advances Tribal Health while Building Trust
HIMSS hosted its second annual Native American & Indigenous Symposium at the 2025 HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition, bringing together members of the HIMSS Native American & Indigenous Community and others working to advance Tribal health. The symposium began with an opening ceremony and prayer by Wallace Coffey, former chairman of the Comanche Nation. During the initial discussion, Evan Dunne, HIMSS Government Relations Manager, moderated a discussion with General Dynamics Information Technology Vice President Donnie Parish and Oracle Health representatives Dr. James Ellzy and Nate Stafford. Each panelist discussed how their respective organizations are modernizing healthcare around the world through technology solutions, most notably in supporting the health and wellbeing of Tribal communities while respecting cultural integration and building community trust.

HIMSS Calls for Risk-Based Regulatory Approach to AI in the U.S.
HIMSS is calling for the United States to adopt a risk-based approach for governing the development, deployment and use of artificial intelligence in healthcare space. HIMSS submitted its recommendations March 14 in response to a request for information from the White House Office of Technology Policy (OSTP). HIMSS reinforced the importance of providers having the right information to make informed decisions about the implementation of AI solutions. The letter also recommended mechanisms be in place to mitigate harmful bias and urged the government to take steps to ensure the United States workforce has the expertise to develop innovative AI solutions and deploy those solutions in a safe and effective manner.

In public comments HIMSS submitted to the US Department of Health and Human Services, HIMSS called for the HHS Office for Civil Rights to consider different approaches to make security, risk assessment and documentation requirements more scalable to the security needs of small practices and practices caring for rural and underserved communities and their business associates. HIMSS comments , made in response to OCRs HIPAA Security Rule To Strengthen the Cybersecurity of Electronic Protected Health Information proposed rule, recommended that OCR convene a wide array of regulated entities, including significant representation from small clinician practices, critical access hospitals, federally qualified health centers and Tribal health providers, to receive feedback on appropriate and scalable use of multi-factor authentication, encryption, risk assessments and other tools to effectively protect electronic protected health information.

Cleveland Clinic London has been validated for EMRAM Stage 7 by HIMSS, just a year after achieving EMRAM Stage 6. Since opening in 2022, the hospital continues on its digital health transformation journey with HIMSS by becoming the first private hospital in the UK to reach EMRAM Stage 6 and Stage 7, the highest possible level of validation. HIMSS Calls for Complete Testing Before Finalizing New Requirements in HTI-2 Certification Proposed Rule Response
Citing concerns about requiring the use of Bulk FHIR v2.0 in 2028 before it has been fully tested against all the required use cases, HIMSS called for modest delays in finalizing several proposed certification requirements as part of a public comment response to the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy’s (ASTP/ONC) Health Information Technology Certification Program. As part of public comments submitted by HIMSS on Friday Oct. 4 responding to the Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Patient Engagement, Information Sharing, and Public Health Interoperability proposed rule (otherwise known as HTI-2), the response from HIMSS focused on Bulk FHIR v2.0 and many of the certification criteria it would support, still being in trial phase.

Taichung Veterans General Hospital Earns 2024 Davies Award for Using AI to Improve Care, Safety and Reduce Pain
Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH), has been recognized as a 2024 HIMSS Davies Award recipient. TCVGH is only the third hospital in Asia and the second in Taiwan to be recognized with the Davies Award since the Award’s inception in 1994. Based Taichung, Taiwan, TCVGH submitted evidence-based case studies demonstrating applications of artificial intelligence to improve care outcomes for patients struggling with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine.
