Karen Clark, CPHIMS, FHIMSS is the Chief information Officer for OrthoTennessee, where she has worked since 1998. She currently serves on the HIMSS Global Conference Education Committee, as a Healthcare Sector Chief for the FBI Infraguard alliance, and as a member of the Data Analytics & Benchmarking Council for the American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE).

Previously, Ms. Clark has served as Chair of the HIMSS HIT User Experience Committee, the CMS Technical Expert Panel, the HIMSS HIE Committee, and the AMGA CIO/CMIO Leadership Committee.

She speaks nationally on the topics of healthcare payment reform and cybersecurity and is passionate about transforming the use of HealthIT to better serve patients and providers. Ms. Clark believes that we are at a tipping point in HIT and have an opportunity to make healthcare technology what it has become in the commercial sector – so well designed and intuitive that it becomes transparent to the person using it.

As chair of the HIT User Experience Committee, she focused the committee’s attention on the nation’s opioid crisis through the lens of the ambulatory clinician’s user experience of interoperability of prescription drug monitoring databases and electronic health records at the point of care. Ms. Clark brought together with the committee representatives from the major EHR companies, interoperability experts, and law enforcement agents to gain better understanding of the current status of the issue and where HIMSS could support efforts toward a better user experience for clinicians and their patients. The result was a published brochure on the topic that has been utilized by the EHRA, HIMSS’s government relations department and has been reviewed and leveraged by federal officials dealing with the opioid crisis.

Mrs. Clark holds a Bachelor of Science from the American University and a Master’s in Business Administration from Fordham University.
