HIMSS Nursing Informatics - Siemens Healthineers Town Hall Series: Part 1 of 3
How Might We Improve Care Experiences by Improving Provider Experiences?

The Universal Screening tool is an innovative solution that uses clinical decision support (CDS) and nurse-driven assessments to improve compliance with certain quality metrics for an admitted patient while reducing clinician workload. The tool makes it easier for the nurse to more reliably screen patients for pregnancy, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), the need for daily Chlorhexidine (CHG) baths, Influenza and Pneumococcal vaccinations. During this first town hall, the successful development, deployment and outcomes associated with the implementation of a Universal Screening tool in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) will be discussed.

The first installment explores the following learning objectives:

  • Describe a clinical decision support tool that empowers practice at top of license, heightens nursing autonomy and facilitates efficient, prompt identification of hospitalized patients with key conditions of interest, notably MRSA, pregnancy, and indications for chlorohexidine bathing.
  • Appreciate that clinical decision support, when joined with nursing assessments, can potentially reduce hospital acquired infections, pregnancy-related complications, and unnecessary variations in care.
  • Recognize potential barriers to implementation and change management opportunities.
  • Leverage a variety of information technology tools in innovative ways to streamline clinician workflow and adhere to practice guideline.
  • Identify strategies that will be effective in augmenting clinical practice while reducing alert fatigue and workload.

This is the first of three nursing informatics town hall virtual events; the second and third town hall installments will take place in September and October respectively.
