Nursing Informatics Community
Our purpose is to articulate a cohesive voice for the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community and to provide domain expertise, leadership and guidance to the global nursing informatics community.
What is Nursing Informatics?
We're often asked to explain what nursing informatics is. Nursing informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. It supports consumers, patients, nurses and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information and technology.
Nursing informatics, at its core, takes the clinical and the technical languages of health and translates them into one. It also promotes meaningful, user-friendly and patient-centric innovation while driving improved outcomes for patients and enhanced clinical workflows for healthcare staff.
Year of the Nurse and the Midwife
The nursing profession is celebrating a milestone in 2020, as the World Health Organization declares it the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife while honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
Throughout the rapidly evolving COVID-19 crisis, dedicated and resilient nurses are ensuring everyone, everywhere has the care they need. No matter the day or circumstance, nurses are there to make a difference. The Year of the Nurse serves to raise public awareness of nursing informatics and the critical role nursing leadership plays in evidence-based decision-making.
HIMSS recognizes and honors the deep dedication and resilience of our global nursing informatics community during 2020, and beyond.
National Nurses Month
HIMSS joins the American Nurses Association, the Alliance for Nursing Informatics and numerous other partners in celebrating National Nurses Month each May. The purpose is to raise awareness of the value of nursing leadership and help educate the public about the role nurses play in improving patient care and transforming healthcare.
