On Wednesday, House Committee on Veterans Affairs Chairman Phil Roe and Ranking Member Tim Waltz announced the creation of a new subcommittee to provide greater oversight of the VA’s EHR modernization project and other major technology initiatives within the department. The creation of the new subcommittee comes almost a month after the VA finalized a contract with the Cerner Corporation to implement a new EHR across the entire VA system. The VA’s EHR modernization project is expected to cost $10 billion over the next 10 years, and the creation of the new subcommittee underscores Congress’ interest in the transition going as smooth as possible, staying within budget, and resulting in true interoperability with the DoD and community providers.

As VA EHR modernization gets underway, HIMSS will continue to dialogue with, and provide technical assistance to relevant stakeholders within both the VA and Congress.
