AI in Healthcare Explained in 280 Characters or Less

Thought bubbles

We reached out to several of our member groups to get their unique perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Here's what they had to say – in 280 characters or less!

AI is game changing as we make healthcare more personalized and accessible. AI processes data and provides actionable insights to better understand and respond to healthcare needs – health-related social needs like transportation and new approaches like virtual visits.

– Christina Caraballo, director, Audacious Inquiry; a HIMSS Interoperability and HIE Community member

Using complex statistical models and self-learning algorithms to help understand and engage with data to make intelligent interpretations that overcome our cognitive bias and limitations.

– Ashutosh Goel, MD, senior vice president, chief information officer, clinical assistant professor, Bio-Informatics Program, Bronson Healthcare Group; Chair of the HIMSS Physician Community

How can AI impact healthcare? Using vast amounts of clinical data, machine-learning techniques can teach the computer to infer diagnosis based on clinical signs and symptoms. When I see the patient, I can then be presented with suggested diagnosis and treatments right away.

– Brian Levy, MD, president, Peak Informatics; a HIMSS Interoperability and HIE Committee member

AI will likely play a key role in overcoming the complexities of HIEs. Despite an emphasis toward standardization, there will be situations requiring costly, complex and time-consuming efforts to normalize data. AI will hopefully help overcome such obstacles.

– Gerard Muro, MD, chief medical information officer, Advanced Radiology Consultant; a HIMSS Interoperability and HIE Committee member

AI is a workflow-embedded assistive tool that can accomplish goals based on pattern recognition that are powered by vast data sets and accelerated computing power.

– Anna Pannier, president, American College of Healthcare Executives of Middle Tennessee; a HIMSS Innovation Committee member

AI is the combination of technologies and computer systems incorporating visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and translation between languages substituting for human intelligence, which sometimes analyzes big data for patterns that provide insight.

– Jay Srini, chief strategist, SCS Ventures; a HIMSS Innovation Committee member

Artificial intelligence is a computerized approach to identify complex mathematical relationships within observational data. AI helps perform descriptive, predictive and prescriptive tasks, such as biomedical discovery, healthcare delivery and disease prevention.

– Lingyi (Michael) Tang, graduate research assistant, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; a HIMSS Innovation Committee member

Artificial intelligence is not artificial, it's the reality which will continue to augment the human intelligence to grow the society overall.

– Shashi Tripathi, chief technology officer, ImpediMed, Inc.; a HIMSS Innovation Committee member
