Last week, Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) and Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA) introduced H.R. 4191, the HHS Cybersecurity Modernization Act. This legislation, an updated version of the HHS Data Protection Act introduced in the last Congress, gives the HHS Secretary the authority to reorganize cybersecurity personnel within the Department, including elevation of the HHS Chief Information Security Officer. H.R. 4191 also requires the Secretary to submit a plan to Congress that addresses a number of issues related to the Department’s (and each of its agencies’) role in maintaining internal cybersecurity vs. its role in regulating and providing guidance and support to the healthcare sector at it works to combat growing cybersecurity threats.
HIMSS worked closely with the bill sponsors as they developed the current version. H.R. 4191 directly reflects HIMSS 2017 Congressional Ask – Create an HHS Cyber Leader Role. Stay tuned for ways you can show support for this important legislation!
