CMS Announces New Bundled Payment Model

On Tuesday, February 9, 2018, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a new, voluntary, bundled payment model entitled, “Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced (BPCI Advanced)”, the Administration’s first Advanced APM. Participants in this model are eligible to earn additional incentive payments pending successful completion of the required components with the goal of improving quality of care and reducing costs.

Regarding the announcement of BPCI, CMS Administrator Seema Verma stated that, “BPCI Advanced builds on the earlier success of bundled payment models and is an important step in the move away from fee-for-service and towards paying for value. Under this model, providers will have an incentive to deliver efficient, high-quality care.”

It is important to note that BPCI Advanced will be an option for an Advanced Alternative Payment Model (Advanced APM) that will qualify for the Quality Payment Program.
