CMS Initiates Social Security Number Removal by 2019 to Combat Identity Theft

On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Social Security Numbers (SSNs) must be removed from all Medicare cards by April 2019 per a requirement in the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015

The intent of the CMS Social Security Number Removal Initiative (SSNRI) is to mitigate identity theft for Medicare beneficiaries. Alternatively, SSN will be replaced with a confidential Medicare Beneficiary Number (MBI) that does not contain a SSN or other personal information. More details on the SSNRI from CMS can be found here.
